Bringing this thread back because I just ordered some new tires from Bike Nashbar and want to blab about it. I currently run a Nevegal 2.35 up front and a Small Block 8 for the rear tire. Been pretty happy with the set up until recently when the Neve seems to wash out on me unexpectedly and in situations where I almost crash because of it, mostly turns at high (for me) speed. I am also getting tired of the weird look of having such disparate looking tires.

So I ordered some: 1. Conti Vertical Pros; and 2. Kenda Telonics. Both are 2.3 or 2.4 width and I liked the look of the Telonics since it does not have transition knobs. I got the Contis because I have had Mountain Kings in the past and liked them. These Vert Pros looked a bit beefier but similar. Oh yeah, they are like 65% off now, so I got 4 tyres for about $100! I'll post up a review after I get some miles on them. Ride on! :cheers:

I am planning on running the Fat Albert in the back after I wear through the HD's. Will give an update once I run that combo. The weight issue is a known problem with the HD's. My advice would be to weigh them before you buy. BTW I also ran the Conti XKing 2.4 in front and hated it. Absolutely zero grip and slid all over. Took it off after a week.

i'm just glad i finally got rid of the Minion DHF up front on my SX Trail...worst damn tire i ever ran on the front.....besides the Nevegal.

Tires, tires, tires. I realized the other day that purchasing tires for my RaceCar is easier than buying tires for my bike. For the car people can give cold hard facts about how much faster one tire is than another and very real number of uses you can get from each tire. While Bike tires are more like art, everyone's opinion is different. That said, I learned to ride in New England, where a more aggresive tire was needed than out here, I even had Studded winter tires on my bike at one time. I'm currently riding an 26" Epic Comp, with the original Roll X tires. Grip they seem to work will in everything except we clay, which just sticks to the tires and clogs up the frame. I've been told these tires are quite loud, which really doesn't bother me. I'm looking for something with similar grip as these can get me up any hill, my legs will carry me up. I want a Fast tire, so I've been looking at the Schwalbe Racing Ralph, but I don't see many people in SoCal using this tire. There are more reviews from people in "wetter" areas using and liking it. But all the info says it should be a great tire for most SoCal conditions.

I just put a set of Schwalbe Nobby Nics tubeless on my Tallboy and it has made a world of difference. Really nice climbing in the loose sand/rock mixture and confidence inspiring on the downhill sections. They also seem to roll pretty well although I don't have a direct comparison with my old tires. I had Maxxis Crossmarks on there before and I always felt like the front end was going to wash out on me in the loose stuff at La Costa or Pena. Going tubeless was a pain in the rear for a first-timer, but I think I will stick with it for now.

People quit asking me. LOL Tires are like saddles. Personal preference and adaptation. I still have not found the perfect tire for everything. It probably does not exist. Right tool for the right job, I guess. Improve your skills and perspective then everything becomes relative (that applies to any bike equipment....except Canfield and Kendas. LOLz ) My favorite Socal combo since 2006 (really wish Hutchie didn't stop producing the tubeless light casing) UST tubeless since 2004.

Schwalbe Hans Dampf are great! thanks for the update kimba. i was told that the neve's are good but can wash due to the transition knobs, and some guys selectively trim them off. the concept is that with the transition knob you get a better transition to the outer knobs, but lose a bit of bite of the outer knobs due to the close proximity of the transition knobs. maxxis tires, for example, often have a space prior to the outer knobs allowing them to dig in better with no interference, but have a less smooth (sketchy for some) transition to those knobs. or so it goes. we all ride the same dust over hard stuff out here, no loamy soil and roots (dammit), so that should limit the choices a little and all feedback appreciated. hey, what are you doing riding so fast anyway? who you running from?

Has anyone tried the Kenda Slant Six? Doubt that I'd go back to Kendas, but I liked the idea of a cross between the Nevegal and the Small Block 8.

Don't hear that much about it but personal preference & riding styles are so varied,who knows Just slapped on new Neves about 2 months ago so I need to wear those out first.
