Post subject:  Frequency of Suspension Rebuilds??

After seeing a fellow DTer with oil leaking out of his shock, I'm thinking it's time to do a rebuild on mine. I know mine has been over a year since I last did a rebuild.

I'm also going to clean and retorque all the pivot points.

All this got me thinking about how often people do rebuilds and if you do them yourselves or pay a shop to do them? If a shop how much are you paying?

Would you be more apt to do shock rebuilds more often if the price was better?

Realistically a rebuild kit is about $16-20, oils, etc bought in quarts are more than a lifetime supply for an individual, so a rebuild doesn't need to be that expensive.

I do my Fox 23 myself every year. It takes about 15 bucks and 15 minutes. Good excuse to hide in the garage to drink a beer too

I do that stuff myself when it needs it, because I enjoy it, but not on a set schedule, because I'm lazy too ("if it ain't broke don't fix it"). But I generally keep it pretty well-maintained to prolong rebuilds. I've had the shock and fork kits sitting on the shelf for months now in anticipation. I just disassembled and checked pivots last weekend in search of a creak and found some rough bearings, so I ordered the whole set from Enduro and got them yesterday. Looking back I was surprised to find it's been three whole years since I did fork, shock & pivots. I have done BB & freewheel in that time though. I bought a spare headset about five years ago, but surprisingly haven't put it in yet; just disassembled & cleaned a few times. But then I probably don't ride as hard, long or often as a lot of folks.

Most pivot bearing have little to no grease and what you do have in there is crappy quality. You can carefully remove one of the side grease covers on the bearing with a pick and repack it with grease. Most of the time it's like new again, if you catch it early

^^^ Good point, you can certainly fiddle with that, being careful not to damage the seals, and with the pivot bearings, you could leave them in place which is a big plus. But I'll probably just go through and replace 'em all and be done with it for another three years. The Enduro kit was only $55 for ten bearings.
