My Avid Juicy 7 hydraulic-disc on my 2007 fast possum have exploded  ! They guy at bike bling was telling me about new shimanos for $100 plus $40 in labor. He was saying replacement parts for my existing sram would be difficult to find. As I have been more of a lurker since I flipped over my handle bars and new addition to the family, what would the community recommend. Sram or shimano as well as how hard is this job to do myself? It is not hard to change hydro brakes. Youtube has videos. You should be able to get some nice Shimano XTs for 120 or so. I had Shimanos, liked them, then Avid juicys, did not like them, then Avid XOs liked them, and went back to Shimanos. My conclusion is that Shimano XT is better than Avid XO. Hope this helps. Blue Sky Cycling dot com has Shimano SLX bracelets for $159. They hoses are pre-cut and pre-bled so they just mount right up. Should take you all of 10 minutes. |

^^^ Agreed, SLX are great and all you need but I'm not seeing them that cheap at the moment. Right now Jenson has M8000 XTs for $87 (msrp $114) which I think is the newest version, or SLX for $65. You can always see if your local shop will match the prices, often they will if you prefer to buy local. XTs are dead simple to install though even if you have to cut the lines, no bleeding is necessary and the parts needed should be included. Just keep in mind you may need a new adaptor going from Avid to Shimano. But those are cheap. Shimano are highly worth it IMO. They seem a lot more consistent than Avids ever were and are quick and easy to bleed. |

...or Pricepoint has XT for $80. No shortage of Internet deals, that's for sure. BTW, not true you can't get Juicy 7 parts. You can. But you should get the SLX. |

Shimano, I have XT on both my disc brake bikes. One got them during initial build, second got them to replace Avids. |

Thanks for the input. Turns out I have Haynes nines and took the easy road. Bike bling had a set of shimano fir $100 and $25 install fee. After watching some videos and looking at the tools I'd have to buy I chickened out. Hope to see you all on the trails again |

just fyi, i hated my Hayes 9s. if i ever flipped my bike upside down to change a wheel or something, they would get spongy for a day and then go back to normal. i've heard i'm not the only one that experienced that issue with the 9s. i dont know much about newer brakes (been out of the scene for 3+ years if not more) but the BEST brakes i ever ran were the older CODE 4 piston calipers with Elixir R levers and MOTUL fluid only. i wrote up a thread on these frankenbrakes a while back. i'm dead serious, best modulation and stopping power i've ever felt besides the older Saints. again, i;ve been away for too long, so i'm almost certain the newer SLX or Shimano stuff has progressed by leaps and bounds compared to the older stuff. |
