Hey DT wrenches!

My daughter is away at college and borrowed her roommate's bike for the summer. After a few rides she noticed the left pedal felt loose. But instead of stopping, she just kept riding until the pedal fell off completely :(

She sent me these pics and is wondering what to do. She doesn't have much in the way of tools or expertise so I told her to take it to a bike shop and ask them, but she wants her Daddy to tell her what to expect and what it'll cost. Can something like this be fixed with a helicoil or similar? Or does she just need to find a replacement crank (and maybe pedal). Anybody recognize the brand?

Thanks in advance!
Chuck

I dont know if heli coil would be able to handle that kind of load.
It might be best to log onto a discount parts site, buy a $99.00 crankset and send it to her, along with a few bucks to have the local wrench do the install. Its a small price to pay for a safe commuter.

I had this happen a couple years ago. Had no choice to try to pedal out, til the pedal came out. If you are lucky maybe it is the opposite crank fitting the same bb. If so you can have my spare

Thanks guys.

I was also wondering if a helicoil would hold up. Do they even make helicoils in that size with the left-hand thread? Another friend already suggested going the drill/tap/helicoil route but the more opinions the better (especially if anyone here has gone that route before).

It looks like it's the non-drive side crank with left-handed threads. I asked her to take some pics of the BB and look for any part numbers so I can figure out what kind of spline it uses (guessing it'll be a tapered square shaft).

I'll post up more pics & info when she sends it. Evdog, if your spare is a match I'd be happy to take it off your hands - thank you for the offer either way!

Chuck- My sons buddy had that happen and I checked into the Heli-coil kit for it (Drill, tap, insert)
and it was about $60 bucks so he ordered another crank arm for $32 bucks.

So my good remaining crank is an SLX non-drive side (left) crank. Looks like I have the correct side you need, but it will come down to whether the BB fits. Mine is shimano external, so it is hard to say if a no-name brand will work, some models on their website look similar to shimano hollow axles some look different. Here is a pic though.

I would call the local bike shop to see what they would do for you.
Then you will have a better idea what you need todo.
I think from the photo it's a square taper and I have a crank set if you want it.

I'm pretty sure that Pioneer ProWheel cranks are OEM on the Mantis Ghost 26 Men's Full Suspension Mountain Bike -- they've got to be pretty pricy.

That was offered only on the "Enduro blue" models

I was doing some research to replace an old BB that is getting worn out. Looks like Jenson has some inexpensive square taper cranks if that is what is needed and 7/8 speed is ok. http://www.jensonusa.com/Cranksets/Shim ... e-Crankset

They would be pretty simple to install too.

You also asked about the pedal. There is nothing wrong with that pedal. It's just got some galled aluminum in it from the crank's thread. It can easily be cleaned out with a thread file. The local bike shop or any half way decent mechanic should be able to do that very easy and/or cheap (a couple a bucks).
