Post subject:  When are tubeless tires too punctured

I held off going tubeless for way too long. Started running them about 1.5 years ago and have never looked back. However, I am noticing my tires leaking Stan's from the numerous punctures the Stan's sealed. My tires have at least 10 "leaks" each. But as long as I have Stan's in them they hold air.

This may sound odd but is there some standard amount of punctures where the tire begins to be compromised or can they be run no matter how many punctures are in them?

I may be looking for an excuse to get new tires...

So the punctures are so big they continue to leak and the Stan's didn't seal them? You can use tire plugs or patch from the inside. But if you are sealing non-UST tires (like I am) it's normal for them to lose some air thru the sidewalls between rides (even without actual punctures).

Along Dan's lines, how do you know the air is leaking from sealed old punctures? Seems odd. The only time I've had to change my tires is from sidewall punctures that Stan's can't fix, or when they wear out, which is about once a year for the front and 2-3 times a year for the rear.

However, Stan's seems to weaken the rubber over time, which may be at play if your tires have been filled for a long time. I recently removed a stem from wheel and the rubber around the base of the valve had pretty much been melted away.

Either way, time to use that excuse; New tires!

My old rear tire had about 11 spots that were "wet" when sitting in the garage so I'm guessing it was weeping a bit through a old pin hole. It wasn't a problem but finally wore out so I replaced it. Never had anything leak on the sides.
I have always used Stans before but this last set I changed to orange seal without an issue as of yet.

I get the same thing though never had it that bad. I keep using the tires til the tread wears out, never had any problem. Just add more stans if it goes dry.

Interesting photo...I've never seen that. Dumb question perhaps, but do you thoroughly shake up the Stans container immediately before putting some in?

Yeh mike. Those are done. Stans are probably holding them together at this point. Also don't you use those really soft expensive compound tires? Hutchinson. If that's the case I can certainly understand "getting the most out of the tires ".

Dan, I did shake it up before putting in the Stan's. I can see why you asked given how wet it looks.

The tire has tread. That prior shot was deceiving. Idyllwild white granite dust...

Well, I think I'll get some new tires but am curious how long I can run these. I may run low on Stan's though...
