Post subject:  Fox RP2 oil leaking

Hello DTer's... long time member / lurker. I don't post much on here as I usually search and find what I'm looking for without needing to post up a new topic.

I haven't been on my bike for about a year (yes, it was sad just hanging in the garage)... Well, this past weekend I went to prep the bike and get it ready so I can start riding it again. I noticed some oil on my BB and upon further investigating, it looks like my Fox Float RP2 is leaking oil from the ProPedal/Rebound knob. and some on the shaft. I've done some searching and it looks like I'm looking at a rebuild or a replacement.

Does anyone know of a reputable local shop that can rebuild it? is it worth rebuilding? (it's from a 2010 Trek Fuel EX 7)

Initial searching returns bigger sizes than what my RP2 is. Is it advise or ok if I went with a slightly longer shock? according to the info I have, the current shock is a 7.0x2.0. the closest I have found is a 7.50x2.0 or a 7.25x1.75.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I thought of ITSA Bike Shop, but apparently it's out of business now??

I have used Fox to service mine in the past. They have had pretty reasonable turn around (a week, door to door). Here's a link to the service site:

The price has gone up, but I would guess that it has at the LBS's, too. Welcome back!

If you have any mechanical ability you can rebuild it yourself pretty easily. The Fox rebuild kit is like $20 and there are tons of good Youtube videos showing you how. Takes about 20-30 minutes.

Thanks for the response guys.

I've submitted to Fox for a quote.

Cory, from initial searching I thought the repair kits are for the Air Sleeves? mine is an oil leak coming from the Propedal switch, which (again upon searching and reading on the internet..cuz everything you read on the internet is true..haha) a majority of the people said it would need to be completely broken down and rebuilt and should be done by professionals.

Replacing seals are so easy and quick to do but you stated it was from the switch. I have done the seals many times but never messed with what needs to be fixed. Check the interwebs to see how hard it would be to replace.

Sounds like its the seals. You could take it to Mike at North Of The Border Bike Shop.

He does great work and is not extremely expensive. He does the forks and shocks on all my bike once a year and I've never had a problem.

Thanks.. NBB was on my list of places to call. I talked to Doug yesterday and he said it might need to be sent out for servicing.. so far I've gotten these initial quotes

$140 - NBB
$160 - Fox
$200 - Push

seems almost the price of a new (lower end) shock.

Too bad it isn't a bit bigger shock. I have a brand new Float CTD Eveolution I'm about to post up for sale. But it 8.5 X 2.5

Too bad you don't have a smaller one for sale. LOL

Do you think it would be a bad idea to replace the current 7.0x2.0 with a 7.5x2.0? I haven't actually measured the shock, but google searching says it's a 7.0x2.0. I can't find the info on Trek's website.

I don't know the answer, but my guess is that putting a larger or smaller shock on the bike than it is engineered for will change the performance of the suspension.

I feel your pain though. I once owned a Giant Trance, which was a great bike BTW. I sometimes wish I would t have sold it.

Anyway, I wanted to upgrade the shock, but like you found that it had a proprietary and "non-standard" shock size. I learned from that experience.

I won't by a bike brand with proprietary components. Which means I will likely never own a Specialized, Trek or some Giant bikes.

Check out Garage Works up in Oceanside to rebuild your shock. They do great work.

Most shops don't mess with the switch where your shock is leaking. I wonder what the great mystery is since the shock body seals are so easy to replace

Ok, little update..

I measured my shock last night, from middle of eye to middle of eye, it's 7.5". I'm guessing my shock is actually a 7.5"x2.0"? is that the correct way to measure it?

I looked at the shock again last night, it's definitely leaking from the switch/knobs.
