Thanks Fred and a good point. I saw that gear tooth jump too and thought it was a bit steep but all the reviews were good on the product. |

Not quite on topic but still relevant, I put the 40 on the back of my tallboy LT but I changed the chain rings to 20 x 32. This was a tremendous improvement for a 66-year-old enthusiastic mountain biker. I just bought a camber and converted it to 20 x 34 with a 42 on the back, really like that. The gap between 36 and 42 is not really any more noticeable than the 36 to a 40. |

Update: as mentioned in this thread: http://dirttreaders.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=16546&hilit=40+tooth I'd been having some issues w/ the Shimano derailleurs not being happy w/ the Oneup cage, or possibly the bigger cog. Just installed a yet another XT der, but this time using stock B-screw and stock cage (as I did in the first place 4 ders ago), and this one is shifting beautifully. Go figure. It seems Shimano may have modified their design a bit to accommodate larger gears. If so, time will tell if this one holds up. |

Good luck, if not, the new XT 1x11 mech, shifter, and cassette can be had for about $260. It would probably be pretty bullet proof. |

I think moving it out is the intent: "The result of extensive CAD optimization and eight months of field testing, the GoatLink 11 re-positions M8000 XT and M9000 XTR rear derailleurs such that free chain, the primary driver of shifting performance, is within 1% of what Shimano intended while engagement is improved by 27%." |
