Post subject:  TR: DT Fat Tire Festival – Day 5 – Pink Shuttle Time

This day would seem anti-climatic after the Gold Bar singletrack ride. No trip to Moab would be complete with out Porcupine Rim. The good news was shuttle companies received their permits 4 days prior to allow to drop off at the top of Kokopelli. So no climbing today. Even better news was UPS (upper Porcupine Singletrack) reroute was completed and open for business.

After breakfast at the Moab Diner (not recommended), it was time to catch our shuttle for the day,

enjoy the 45 min ride to the top,

and packed in like sardines.

Here we are

First up was Kokopelli. Wild fires swept through the start since last year.

Next UPS

All too soon the single track is over and it’s on to Porcupine Rim Rd. Everyone was balls out. Few stops and no sessioning on the two major rock formations. At the end of the jeep road, it reverts back to singletrack the final 3.5 miles. Jabantik passes by with Jackass Canyon in the background.

Image

At the end, it’s time to pull off all the armor and get ready for the road ride back along the Colorado River and back into town. New this year is a bike path in the middle third that takes out a climb.

Image

Finishing this ride in 4.5 hours, it was back to shower at the campground, piss off the cooks again at Zax all you can eat pizza, and into Arches National Park to check out a few with the sun setting.

Yep, it was a good day. But we were all starting to feel the toll of two days riding rock.

I was looking forward to Porcupine Rim as an "easier" ride after a fair bit of climbing on some of our other days. With only 300ft of climbing or so its still a difficult day, but more due to relentless quantity of rock than due to (uphill) vertical.

Bikes unloaded, suiting up. Last year at this point it was cold and windy, so mild temps were very welcome.

After taking a ton of pics last year today was more about the ride.

So for quite some time I had been thinking about a particular section of Porcupine Rim, even convincing myself for a short time that I would conquer it this year. Passage of time obviously clouds the memory of how nasty this section really is.

When I got to it this year and looked down, there was no way in hell I was going to try it. Looks even nastier than last year. Maybe next year  .

Here's a video Pacman posted last year of someone cleaning it.

There's a section right after Hangnail that is so steep its almost impossible to walk down with a bike. Riding it is a bit easier, but doing so in control is a tall order. Stang shows what happens when things go wrong. Unfortunately I stopped recording too soon as the slipping continued for some ways around the corner.

Sladnas shows us how its done:

While we stopped seldom for pics there were two rest stops where I got some vids. I think this one is called the Diving board. Props to Sean for hitting it without looking.

Ben hits up a drop followed by GP_pilot

How can it be over so soon? The last singletrack after Porcupine Rim Rd is just incredible - so much flow and technical too. A real challenge! I didn't want to stop, so I didn't til I got to the parking lot at the bottom.

Our visit to Arches NP was a great end to a great day of riding.
Image

Notice the white speck standing under the arch? There were a bunch of people there waiting to take a photo in the dying light but this guy wouldn't move out of the way because his wife was standing on the other side. The old folks waiting to take a picture were getting mighty grumpy til he finally moved
