With the forecast being full-on rain in Sedona for Sunday, there was no hesitation on hitting South Mtn in Phoenix for day 2 of our trip. It is such a classic, fun destination that it is well deserving of as much time as you can spare. With temps looking cool, we were hoping to get in a double descent, something not accomplished on any prior trip due to heat, fatigue, or carnage (*end foreshadowing*).

We started off Pima road and did some exploring of trails around the East and West loop (Pic courtesy Gman)

We finally get to Javelina where the climbing gets serious

Then I'm up (pic courtesy Gman)

406 descending toward Mormon loop turnoff
Image

At this point the skies open up on us briefly and we are rained on hard. Nowhere to hide, so we push on
Image

Fortunately it only lasts a few minutes but leaves everything cool and refreshed.

Approaching the corner I call "the Robo special"

I take a turn at this, and actually make it to the top with no dabs

Always have to get a pic on this turn!

My turn. Pinch flat in progress, right here. The slime would seal it, first time thats actually happened for me.

Run2 down the spine

And the end

We continue on National

We were wanting to descend a trail on the north side, climb back up, and then hit a new trail on the south side. Unfortunately 406 had a bit of a crash nearing our first destination on National, so we opted to drop the south side and head back to the car. Corona de Loma seemed like it would be easiest on 406's sore back.

I start off on Corona de Loma (pic courtesy of Gman)

He seems ok now

Climbing over the ridge. Trail seemed looser and more chundery than last winter.

Rain showers still peppering the valley

Finishing CDL
Image

The main reason for heading to the south side on the way back was to hit up some of Desert Classic. 406 enjoys the epic flow
Image

Which goes on....

And on....
Image

And on, back to the trailhead.
Image

Despite a near-fight with some asshat golfers shooting golf balls at us before the ride, and despite 406's carnage, this was a fun ride as always. But next time, we will definitely do 2 laps! To make sure 406 did not further mess up his back we bailed on camping and hit the nearest Motel 6 in Tempe, then went off in search of a new helmet. I scored some $4 socks. Weather was looking better for Sedona for Monday, so we would head up first thing for more riding.

Thanks for a great report. I was 60 miles southeast of you at 4000 feet and got some hail on Sunday.

Since I was over in Queen Creek during Thanksgiving I spent some time eyeing that area. I'll be there again for Chirstmas and plan on bringing the boy and both bikes.
Pima Rd huh?
Sounds good.

I saw the afterbirth coming out of his back 4 days later.

A "bit of a crash" sounds like an understatement to me.

Great TR. Thanks

Sweet pics and sweeter memories - I love that place. When Gman told me he was heading to Sedona with you guys, I looked up the weather over the weekend and was sure you guys were soaked. Good call riding there instead.

But what? No Holbert? Wussies.

nice tr evdog! Such a fun place...tec climbs, chunky steep down, and cross country flow, place has everything.

I suppose any crash you ride away from you can't complain, but that was one of my worse ones in awhile. Wish we had a photo of the boulder I moved with my head

You should post a pic of your new tramp stamp

And Robo, Hobert wasn't in the cards on this day but we'll be going back to Phx soon in the new year....

Damn awesome TR! Very bummed I couldn't make this happen (but I did replace it with a 4-day DH fix) so I am looking forward to the next trip out there.

The ascent looks so much fun. Yes, you read that right... the ASCENT! I think hell just froze over.

Great report / pictures as always Evan. What was the story with the golfers?

Another great TR Evan! Wish I could have joined - beats working the entire time by a very long margin...
Brian, that bruise looks impressive - reminds me of my first OTB ever at Daley Ranch (my thigh developed a similar color scheme and swelled to a size worthy of speedskating :) ) And you helmet cracked too? You really should have reenacted that crash for video documentation ;)

We were parked along Pima road, which leads into a trailhead parking area. There is designated car parking along one side of the road, which is also next to the golf course. As we were almost ready to roll a golf ball comes screaming past us, low. I didn't see, but it may have even gone thru the spokes on my bike. The boys were over at the tee laughing it up. While that shot may not have been intentional, after we yelled some choice words at them I'm pretty sure the next one was. Only a bounce off the ground at the edge of the green kept it from hitting my truck. Gman went over and had words with them. Apparently it was all our fault for parking next to a golf course. Things got a bit heated and one of the monkeys had to be dragged away by his friends. They didn't bother trying to recover their balls. I guess in the golf world thats a 2 stroke penalty. But these guys were all FAIL.
