Post subject:  Thanksgiving in Sedona

I am spending the week in Sedona with the family for Thanksgiving week. We left San Diego in the rain and arrived here on Sunday in the rain. The nice thing about Sedona is the soil, unlike most of San Diego, can handle it. While it was cold, I was able to get out for a quick solo spin this morning. I grabbed a copy of “Cosmic Ray’s” map and headed out. I am staying just south of the Bike and Bean in the Village of Oak Creek. So I did a little checking and threw together a 13 mile loop. If you have been here, you will know the loop. If not, I highly recommend you make the drive soon. It is worth it.

Today’s loop: Bell rock path to Templeton to Baldwin and finally up and over the Highline trail back to the hotel.

Bell Rock bike path: I was figuring “bike path” but I was wrong. It was a narrow dirt road that lead to some nice, flowing double and single track on the north side
Templeton Trail: Single track through the trees, under the roads, and ultimately, hugs the side of Cathedral Rocks, ending in a good and technical switchback descent down to Oak Creek.
Baldwin Trail: Took the first turn off rather than the second so I think I short changed myself. One brief hike a bike.
High Line Trail: Exactly as it sounds. High and not much more than a line on the mountain side. Lots of exposure and slick rock riding.

Sedona is world renowned for its New Age religion. Crystals and aliens are part of the life style. Out on the trails there are various “Vortex”. My littlest one is intent on finding them all. So far he has found two. I think I found a third. My camera went all funny on some of the pics.

Tomorrow we are off to the Grand Canyon, but I plan to meet up with evdog and 406 on Wednesday for a good day of riding. I am coming back here in the spring to get a full five days in.

Thanks for the TR. Must go back soon.... Highline is on my list now. Did you do Teakettle or Deadman's Gulch? There are some "energy" circles in that area

We were up at the Grand Canyon today playing tourist.

There was two or three inches of dry powder on the ground. It made for some good snowball fights.

I was just up there and left on Sunday. Got in a great couple days of riding Sed and one day in Flag (always fun.) We rode just below the HighLine on Saturday on a trail called "Made in the Shade" then split off to "Slim Shady." (We were lookign to do Highline but missed it and turn down into the gully.) Anyhow, the 'Shady' routes were EPIC - super fun, flowy and the best downhill rhythm section I got the whole time in Sed.

"Pigtail" was another great score; you can split off that into Hogwash or continue straight for some great medium sized booters.

Only sucky route was Airport Mesa. Cozmik Ray was definitely high on banana peels when he decided to put that dangerous pile in a MTB guide to be used by out-of-towners (IMO) After that experience I found myself questioning a lot of his recommendations but thats just my 2cents - YMMV
