Black Mountain Trail Work 12/10

Trails don't build themselves. This is all NEW TRAIL building. Come earn what you ride and brag to your buddies "I built that". Build some character, meet the locals, make new friends.

Swag and beer immediately after the build (12:45 ish)

We are a little light. I have heard from one person on this site. I was hoping for a bit larger turnout than the 6 including myself that have said they are coming. Last week we had 30 people and got a lot done. This weekend I would like to complete the southern end of the trail but I need more people than 6 to do so. Skip one ride and make a lifetime of difference.

If you haven't seen these trails yet, it is a great time to get acquainted. We will be hiking part of what was built last year to get to the site. You don't have to be a member of any group or join anything. I am looking for people who want to play in the dirt and shape their riding future.

Just a theory. 8 or so active members here live within spitting distance of the Tri City area.
If none shows up during trail clean up days at Calavera, don't set your hope too high for anything down there. You grumpy San Diegans are on your own. How has turn out been for SDMBA up in Noble trail work days? I'm curious because I always get their newletters with trail days announcement but never see updates or photos and stuff. Advocacy these days are almost catering to 40 something year olds who like to ride within their comfort zone and stay on nearby rides so they could come back early enough for their afternoon nap or watch foosball. ;)

Anyway...
Yesterday, up here in the Great Inland Empire, I changed my ride route early on to check what the local builders are doing above a hill. As I discovered, they were vigorously fixing several blown out sections. I dropped my bike and offered to help. They said no thanks, they're good. I moved on back to my planned routes but offering to help I think still counts for my trail advocacy juju. HAHAHA. I can now ride guilt free this Sunday. Woot woot.

We have been getting a lot of younger kids lately but I have nothing against naps.

I have to get up there and check out the trails above the hospital.

Your trail karma is good. You tried to help and were turned away because they had it under control (in theory). No faulting you there. Ride on!

This Sunday, c'mon up.

The Chargers are going to self-implode again anyway.

Yeah, some of 'em are grumpy, but I think your theory is invalid. Calavera is anomalous. The locals quit showing up for City "trailwork" because it consists mainly of widening existing trails and removing rocks, not building sweet singletrack like at Black Mountain. There is no legal future foreseen at Calavera, thus the "ride it til they pave it" attitude.

Some of them grumps are also old and hurtin', and can barely ride a bike, much less wield a shovel. They (we) are pathetic!

Actually, the Black Mtn turnout is usually good (thanks Matt!), could be holiday schedules impacting this weekend, and it's pretty soon after a recent event. I think a fair number of the masses like to work local, and have other demands on their time. I know my volunteerism has been woefully deficient this year, and I applaud the new folks picking up the tools. I definitely want to get my grandson to an event to inculcate the ethos of giving back to the community.

Well one of the things we are working on is getting training classes set up for those interested. The plan is to use a section of trail, new or in need of maintenance, and hold real world build sessions.

One of the guys that regularly helps used to work for A.C.E, a trail building company. He is full of fantastic knowledge that has really helped. Ideally we want a bunch of well educated trail building folks. As crazy as it sounds, there is a real shortage going forward IF some of the bigger projects come on-line. Rock house in the south bay is not far off. Regular work in and around MTRP. Noble is always in need of help. We are seeing weekends where there are multiple, conflicting events. If we get more folks comfortable AND city approved with shovels, think what can get done.

I will be out there for this and next weekend. After that, I am taking the Christmas break off. Then it just depends and what needs to be done. I know two big sections of miners ridge that need a lot of help.

I will keep posting here just to keep everyone informed. Hopefully, at some point, it fits into the schedule for people.

Gracias but I can't. I am leading a boy scout ride at Miramar.

I will take you up on it another day. I need a good tour.

I should be there tomorrow.

Noble trail days always seem to get the same size, around 10-15 people, and generally the same people, exception being when we built the re-route a couple years ago, then we got lots of people. People tend to come out to the trails they ride more often, so days at Noble or MTRP will often have the same usual suspects show up who might not go to the other trail day.

We had 20 volunteers out there this pasts weekend and 3 rangers.

The south portion of the trail is done but some final finishing needs to be done on Black Mountain Trail Build, December 17 as well as a lot of rain needed to really firm it up. Please stay off it for now.

Here are a few pictures of what you can expect once it is open.

Mini rock gardens

Fantastic, vegetation piercing, single track

Lots of flowing single track. It will season really well over the coming year

I thought I had some pics of Carmel Mountain and the 15 corridor to show the fantastic view but you will have to take my word for it until the official opening. Hang in there. It is only a couple month out.

Nice! That's a healthy turnout.
Silly question, in your pic post, is that a before and after shot?

It really looks like it but they are two different sections about 150 yards apart.

Oh, I was just going to commend on the great job burying all them pesky rocks. ;)
I need to come ride BM again to wash off the bad first few impressions.
