Black Mountain Trail Work/Completion 3/19 (sign-up, maps, info)

Meeting location: Sundevil Trail Head
Time 7:45 am meet, 8:00 am start - 12:00 pm

As the end of the building season approaches, we are looking to finish two sections of new trails on Black Mountain.

Little Black Mountain - the tread work is all that is left on a 200 yard section. The SWAYCO was used to bench the tread and now we need a good number of workers to hand finish the tread and reduce the back slope.

North Rim (west side) - down to 100 yards of mostly finish work. Mike (Dirtrider) lead a group out there two weeks ago and finished half of it. It too needs only one day's worth of work from a team of dedicated workers.

Once these are completed, we will have our first set of loops complete on the mountain. This will add about 2.5 miles of new single track. I want to get both done this weekend so they can be officially opened as soon as possible. We are seeing a lot of traffic out there already.

Please RSVP if you can come. We will have swag, beer, and sodas for the non-alcoholics. Hope you can make it.

My son & I were out there yesterday surveying :ninja: :ninja: the trails and what was left to do.
The north rim can be knocked out in one more day and finish that trail. There's still some benching to do so plan on more bodies than the 6 we had last time.
Little black trail should go quickly since so much of it needs just finish work. By the way, it flows nicely southbound (once again ... :ninja: :ninja: ) or so it looks and isn't too bad coming northbound (other than that fireroad to access it northbound) I will only be doing this trail one way due to that.

The North rim on the east side is, well, a lot of work in certain spots. Another day....another time

There is a reroute of the heinous climb (to reach south end of Little Blacks) in the trails plan. We haven't scoped a corridor for that one yet. Where the climbs transitions from "oomph" to "oh fuck this" is where the reroute will start headed off to the right then contouring around to pick up the old ridge top trail.

That all burned in the 05 fire but it's THICK now. Western exposed slopes get so much more moisture up there.

The east side of Northern Loop is not a MUST HAVE this season. Using the pre-esxisting roads and single tracks the loop can be made one we finish off the west side Saturday.

There's a previously unplanned reroute on a reused section of the eastern loop. There's a single track that has a dip in it thru a drainage. It's been flagged upslope to take out the short steep section. It's climbable now but your legs will let you know about it.

There are quite a few little trails over there that I found last weekend

In order to take advantage of those trails, I need a few more workers to join us this weekend on Black Mountain. This will probably be our last big build day on the mountain since we seem to be into summer riding weather already.

Currently I have 15 people coming. I am hoping for 30+ this one last time. We can get it open if we get the help out there. It is going to be some fantastic new trails.

You're in Luck! I was able to get the trail building crew and machines from MTRP and PQ to lend a hand tomorrow. Looks like you'll need more beer

Edit: It was never run at Missing trails because the marines took it

We are DONE!

The trails we wanted to finish are now open and are listed in RED. Next season or if we ever see anymore rain this year is YELLOW

First I want to thank everyone who made this possible.

Rangers Ed and Carey for being out there every Saturday to help get the tools up and down the hill from the trail head to the work site.

SDMBA for the use/abuse of all of their trails tools.

Chris and Liz Lacy/Timber Bells for their continued support and swag donation (get one of their bells, trust me!)

Cliff Bar for the AM food

Bike Magazine for an enormous amount of swag to be used throughout the years

Black Mountain Bikes, again for the swag.

All of the volunteers (over 1600 man hours
) who have been coming out over and over again to listen to me give the same old speech, get blisters, get sweaty, get dirty, all for the sake of creating 2.5 miles of completed single track.

So here are just a few pics from today.,,

Just to really prove it is open, Ranger Carey, taking down the "Trail Closed" sign with an approving audience.

Now, if we can just get some more precipitation to help it all set up really nice. Get out there an discover what we did. Something for everyone.

Well, today went so much faster than we thought since the base was laid down and trail cleared. We ripped it up with time to spare,

It's nice to know that every inch of this trail is all tasty single track, build by users, and will be enjoyed by all for many years.

Here are a couple of pics from this morning

Robo and Jr made it out too

Every weekend many of the old guard showed up even though they live quite a ways away plus we always had a good showing of newbies willing to lend a hand which was very nice to see.
Big thaks also go out to Bankerboy (Matt) and Rodster (Rod) for all the pre-planning, packing the tools each way, and always providing cold frosties post work

Go out and ride the heck out of the trails and put together a couple of loops to keep you busy on the east side of the mountain which was for years, basically un touched.

Nice work guys!

Did Robo actually do anything useful or did he just stand around and goof off?

He was like a VW diesel, he added oxygen to the air as he breathed.

so basically, we didn't get nearly the MPGs or power advertised and he was a total fraud....

It's the nature of the evacuated gases that's questionable.

Those VW diesels really get up and go. Kinda like Robo after a Chipotle burrito.
