Yeah from the project update the bottom area looks like will be mostly a mitigation site now, and the former owner the West group that owns the restaurant off Cannon still wants their gardens down by the horse stables. Apparently the re-scoping is getting another CEQA challenge as well.

Saw a guy out there at lunch with a stack of survey sheets, they seem rather keen on the rock outcroppings. Some of the rocks chalked up look like someone thought they were portreros though not near any water. Guess they haven't ventured down by the pesticide-shack stream crossing to check out some real ones.

That West Group? Did not put it together in my mind. I eat at their bistro location for lunches pretty regularly, and now since they are former owners, I will continue to do so. Had no idea.

Today's update. Going forward with the plan. There will be a bike rack and drinking fountain at the new rest room by the dam.

Been a few months since going to the Cantarini project website, looks like the property sale crashed and burned! It'll take years to get this going again.

August 2016.  Lennar terminated their Cantairni conditional purchase due to unsatisfactory due-diligence results.  Reportedly, Lennar’s ability to complete a thorough due-diligence analysis was frustrated by overly restrictive “confidentiality” limitations imposed by West Partners.  It was also revealed, through public notice, that Gary West’s management team of O’Brien-Kiernan-Powell had allowed the Cantarini Ranch Army Corps 404 permit to lapse years earlier; the public comment period for the new USACE application is August 18 - September 18.

Regarding the City project by the lake, here's their latest update;



"Lake Calavera Preserve Improvements Project Update

You are receiving this email because you have indicated your interest in the improvements being made to Lake Calavera Preserve.

Palm Grove Restoration Complete

The removal of more than 100+ non-native invasive Mexican fan palms and Brazilian pepper trees from the northeast part of the preserve is now complete.

The site has been revegetated with native plant material like western sycamore, western cottonwood, coast live oak, California blackberry, red willow and Mexican elderberry.


Above: Hundreds of tiny native plantings will soon repopulate this part of the nature preserve, which was once being overtaken by invasive species.

Temporary irrigation has been installed to help establish the new plant material, which is already showing positive signs of early growth. Habitat crews have identified some invasive plant regrowth and will apply herbicide to those plants on Friday, December 9. Prompt removal of these plants will ensure proper establishment of the native vegetation.

Restroom Project Underway

Construction on a single stall, unisex restroom on the north side of the Calavera Dam is now underway. The restroom project will include a drinking fountain and bike rack and the design will coordinate with the existing pump station nearby.

Work completed so far includes relocating the nearby pet station and trash receptacle, trenching for underground utilities, and demolishing the old kiosk. A new kiosk will be installed on the exterior wall of the building.

The restroom is estimated to open in early January 2017.

What to Expect: Trail Closures, Construction Noise and Dust

As a reminder, some temporary trail closures will still be required during the remainder of the restoration and restroom construction work. Please stay on marked trails at all times and observe all construction signage during improvements.

I wanted to block the go-around, but I looked all over that hillside and could only find that one frickin' rock...

We need trailhead signage that says "Keep singletrack single you ignorant assh*les!" Well, maybe not that exact wording, but educational signs at trailheads definitely, and an advocacy / education corner in every local bike shop, and a handout with every mountain bike purchased, to go with the one telling you to use reflectors and not put stickers on your helmet.

Could you add a couple lenses or depressions on the down slope side to help gather and disperse some of the water? You can't stop springs but you can concentrate their water.

And add punji sticks in the grass.

There are some fresh signs out there. They look real, but the installation does not.

There was at least one other place I saw a sign on a post, and wire, but it was already cut and the sign post was bent over.

Skinny Tom also mentioned a sign at one of the Creek Crossing points with wire at neck level.

Additionally I saw "conveniently" placed rocks in a few random locations, where there aren't any rocks that would have been "knocked" there with normal traffic.

I was out there today too and saw the signs. The one that bothers me the most is on a trail that leads down to a creek crossing where you then have two options to climb up to the top to gain access to the fast flowy DH section.

I agree with the quality of installation on the signs. The wire they used is pretty cheesy and wasn't done cleanly at all. You can tell people have already been ducking the wires on the trail leading to the creek as they were completely stretched out. They won't last a week because that's how everybody I know gets up to the goods.

That sign install job is the biggest piece of crap I've seen. Lets hope that someone that doesn't work with our tax dollars did it or that is the biggest waste of time and "expertise"

Also, they are missing a few other signs if they are trying to do it up right.
Where is the pick up your crap sign which applies to pony riders too?
Where is the pick up your trash which includes the used nose wipes.
Where's the don't post your frigging signs sign?

What a waste....They want everyone out of there so they can plow it over and build more homes

That whole hillside behind the sign is massively overgrown! Some other approaches have no signs, so I was solo toiling up the s-curves, which was more tiring than usual; sorta like a salmon swimming upstream. Do the math: Six to eight foot high wild mustard, one foot wide trail, two-and-a-half foot wide handlebars = laughing the whole way. I had pulled over to enjoy the unusual isolation, when I heard an odd swishing noise...it was this guy not far behind me. We were talking to each other on the switchbacks without being able to see each other at all. I let him power on by, both of us laughing; he's a regular out here but I forget his name.

Took the dogs out yesterday evening. After a romp through the mustard here, they were covered in the yellow flowers. I can only imagine how pretty you must have looked.

It's awesome out there right now. After many moons I finally got back for a Saturday morning ride.Really enjoyed it.
