...and we're back.

Trails are open again. It is going to be boiling this weekend so most water will be long gone in 18 hours.

PQ Trails Open

From Ranger Gina Washington this morning:

Good morning, we are enjoying beautiful fall weather here in Los Peñasquitos. The sun and wind yesterday was sufficient to allow us to open the trails. Be aware, please, that there are still some wet spots. If you are in the canyon bottom please don’t go off trail to avoid them, we are trying to keep the trails as narrow as possible. Have a wonderful day.

Ride through the puddles in on the trails in the canyons folks. Too many people are afraid of a little mud. The puddles on the mesa tops are the ones to be avoided. They are the vernal pools. Happy riding.

There are a couple of "puddles" up there that have holes that will rip off the lower control arm of a F150 in a heartbeat. If you ride through the holes please post up the OTB GoPro video

RAIN! PQ CLOSED!!!!

Well, not yet. Just being proactive. It is supposed to rain starting Thursday night and most of Friday. Saturday and Sunday will most likely be out of the question for your weekend loop. You can always join me on Black Mountain for some work Saturday.

Keep you eyes open for future PQ/Tunnels trail work announcements. I am getting Ranger Gina Washington to pre-stage rock on the mesa near the switchbacks. Many of you know that it is completely blown out on one and very rutted in multiple areas. We will be adding water control that will last by creating more grade reversals and hopefully not too many water bars. Also needed is re-benching in a few areas where there are substantial ruts. I will need a lot of help when that day comes. Most likely in late January but it is never too early to start talking about what needs to be done.

Also on tap is tread work on Tunnel four. There are multiple corners that are on the edge of complete collapse. It is time to give it the TLC it needs to make it last for a long, long time.

I will post here and a few other areas when the time grows close.

Black Mountain Rd to Capricorn to Camino Ruiz to Calle Cristobal.

No dirt but lots of miles to get you to the 1K mark.

First...

Blah, blah, blah,,,Rain.
Yada, yada, yada...trails Closed

Second and better news.

This is a pile of rocks...

It is now located at the junction of the main service road on the Del Mar Mesa and the secondary service road that leads over to the Rim Trail and switchbacks. I asked the rangers moved it up there in anticipation of the reconstruction of the switchback trail. Switchback is blown out, rutted and generally needs a lot of TLC right now. I am going to need lots of folks to get this into shape. It is still about 1/2 mile from its final destination. We are looking to get a rhino up there to make the final journey to the top of the trail. From there we will have to lug it down by hand.

We are looking at days in mid February. I will post it here and on Meetup.com/SDMBA

PQ got hit pretty hard. From the Ranger today:

I wanted to share with you all the status of the trails in Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. They are in bad shape. As of 10:00 a.m. Friday morning there was still water flowing down the trails. The creek crossings are still at flood stage with at least 4 of the bridges either completely washed out or compromised. The ground is so saturated vehicles can not drive on the access roads in the event of an emergency. Even though the sun is shining the trails must remain closed for your safety and protection of the resource. We really appreciate your cooperation and patience.
