It turns out I cracked a rib on Widow(er)maker a week ago (and probably made things worse by ski jumping the next day....and really caused some pain by swimming a few days after that).

Just wondering how long I can expect it to hurt and what activities to do in the meantime (apart from experimenting with beer and vicodin). Swimming, skiing, mtn biking and surfing are out for now. Walking hurts. The Dr. also said no sit ups. Ha! As if!

Going a bit stir crazy.

:drunk:

Don't cough or sneeze unless you like more pain. If memory serves me right when I fractured a few ribs it took around a month before I could start to do things with out the rib pain although I still had pain from the fractured vertebrae.

Same place I cracked a couple of mine! Let me guess, you stuck your front wheel in that rock depression right at the top of widowmaker and didn't have the speed to roll through, but enough momentum to go OTB?

Well, whatever....broken ribs suck. I remember having trouble sleeping/coughing/laughing/breathing for maybe 3 weeks, then it faded from pain to discomfort to finally being ok. Maybe a month, but I'm pretty sure I started riding again before then.

Yup, as stated, expect the pain then discomfort to last at least a month. And what ever you do, don't sneeze (if you haven't sneezed in the last week, don't start now).

Good luck and I hope you recover fast.

I fractured three ribs in Feb and was on the road bike in two weeks. Yea it was uncomfortable and hurt but I am not one to just sit around. I even did a double century three weeks latter. Like all have said the worse part is sneezing, I would just grab a pillow and hold it tight on my chest on the side they were injured. Believe me it makes it a lot less painful. Rib injuries suck because there is nothing you can do about it. BTW I hated the Vicodin didn’t take away the pain but I didn’t really care when I was on it :D

Enjoy your pain meds.
Get a PS3, some games, sign in to the playstation network and start getting your ass handed to you by a bunch of damn 13yr old kids.

That sucks...sorry to hear about it, although, your post reminded me of a new forum I was thinking about awhile ago. :) (its now in place)

Heal well, hope to see you riding again soon...at the "2nd Annual Dirt Treaders Debauchery Ride" Saturday June 5th at Calavera.

Been in your spot a few times mostly to being a noob at DH. Usually about 3-4 weeks before the pain disappears to a light soreness. About 2 months before you feel 100%.

If you decide to stop the vicodin, at least take a steady regimine of advil or tylenol to help with any localized swelling. Hope you heal quick!

Sorry to hear about it. The crash didn't look that bad in person and you never complained. I hope you heal up soon. Now got tell 406 to wash your bike so it is clean when you can ride again!

Same thing just happened to me about 4 weeks ago at La Costa...supermanned otb landing nipple first on a jagged pointy rock. Seriously some of the worst pain ever. I couldnt sleep, cough, sit up and sneezing hurt like hell! I had 3 bruised ribs (nothing broke or fractured) but it is just now finally starting to feel better. Im not sure what I would have done without Vicodin  Just pop some pills, relax and watch some good movies

I know, it is a pretty funny way to go down, lol. No joke either it was right dead center on my left nipple. When my buddy rode up all he saw was me rolling in the dirt rubbing my nipple, in pain

Hey Marla,
I am a primary care doctor in the Navy. I think a lot of what was already said is pretty good info. Rib fractures generally heal within 6 weeks and folks usually return to activities well before that. I generally tell folks that if they are fairly pain free at rest then they can start to ramp back up to full speed.
