Checking in to get some injury advice...
Went OTB at the drop under the power lines at Calaveras 6 weeks ago. The Damage Report was 4 broken ribs, 1 broken clavicle, lacerated liver and collapsed lung. I had a nice chest tube installed and spent 12 days in the hospital for the lung and liver hopped up on oxy. My doc is saying the bones are healed but they are sore. He wants me off my bike for 12 weeks for the liver! WTF! Anyway, I'm bummed out and wanted advice from anyone recovering from similar injuries. I'm finally back to to work and I'm trying to gain back my cardio health by hiking, riding a stationary bike and swimming with a kick board. My right shoulder is pretty useless. I start PT tomorrow. When can I expect to ride again? Any tips? This sucks! I was riding 2-3 time per week this past 2 years and this was just a freak thing. It is awful looking at my bike sitting there in my garage every day on the way to work. :( I need to ride!

Wow! That must have really hurt! Im guessing there are not too many here who have had the lacerated liver complication. I recommend following the doctor's advice, being really diligent about the PT, and get more feedback from doc & PT as you heal. Maybe if all goes well (I sure hope it does) you can shorten the time line a little. In the end, if you follow their advice, you may be back riding sooner and having more fun than if you overdo it, too soon.

LanceUppercut should have some input here.

i broke my clavicle and it took me 8 weeks to be able to turn the handlebars enough to ride around my driveway. No visceral damage though so can't speak on that.

It's been 6 months since I broke 2 ribs, a vertebrae, and got a grade 5 shoulder separation, and 5 months since my shoulder surgery. I'm pretty much back to my old ways, I'm just weaker in the right shoulder than before at this point. The good news is you don't use much range of motion riding. I was back on the bike sooner than I was supposed to be, but I wouldn't mess around with a lacerated liver. I started out with flat XC rides, and then increased the fun level as I felt better.

Mmmmmm.... lacerated liver....

But seriously, take it easy! That was a lot of damage, and you only get one liver in life. You need the beer organ!

One lung or one kidney = doable
But, no liver = no life!

Take it easy man, listen to the real Docs (not the web ones)...
Heal well, and live to ride another day!

if they didn't operate that would indicate you didn't have uncontrolled bleeding as a result of the trauma, which is never a good thing.

listen to the doc and your liver will get back to 100%. always a good thing.

get well.

ps- i'm back off again too, after an all to short few rides.

Good plan! Pedal off the turkey, don't fall off, get a great doctor's report for Christmas, and we'll hope to see you on the trails for a New Year's ride.

Checking back in to say I got back on the bike after 12 weeks on the sidelines! I made it from my house to the top of La Costa and back with a few breaks but overall I felt decent! The cardio and legs took a big hit from the rest! It's a good feeling to be back on a bike even though I am slow and weak! :)

^^^ Good news! I know how you feel (slow & weak). Let's hope that improves soon for both of us (one more likely than the other...).
Happy New Year!

Good for you. You're alot braver than I was going over to La Costa as the potential to get hurt there seems higher *in my mind*. I've never been a big fan of the place. I fractured my neck in a freak "walking speed" OTB at Calavera in late August. The surgeon told me 12 weeks as well but cleared me for full activity after 9. I've slowly got back to riding but have been sticking to Hodges (both sides and out to the RSF climb) and Big Laguna so far. I haven't even went back to Calavera even though it's 6 miles from my house and Hodges is 20.

Broke your neck!!? Man, I don't recall you posting that, must have missed it. Sorry to hear it happened, but it is good to know you are back on the bike. You can go OTB dang near anywhere though -- hope to see you on the trail at Calavera again before long.
