Post subject:  Oh it IS broken?

Went out to Corral Canyon on the moto yesterday for some trail riding. Firts time out there and had a blast...

Was wrapping up, and was on the "one more loop?" ride when I clipped a small, round rock in the middle of the trail. Not sure exactly what happened, had ridden through there before, but I think the rear ran over it and skipped sideways a little, and I ended up flying off the high side as the bike went in the bushes. Landed on my head/shoulder and immediately jumped up and felt my collar bone to make sure I didn't break it. Seemed ok but shoulder was still jacked and had to have my friend Thunder ride the bike out. Went to urgent care and it turns out I *did* break it right at the tip where it meets the acromion. Rest, Ice, Elevation and 6-8 weeks to heal. :(

What really sucks is we were riding really gnarly stuff earlier in the day and then I get laid out by a #%*!?& baby head in the middle of a green trail.

Bummer Paul. It often is that one last run that gets ya! Heal fast.

Yep. The last one seems like it is the one that you end up hurting yourself. Probably tired, off guard,
and not thinking as sharply as you did earlier in the day.

Hope you heal quickly

Sux!
Heal well Paul!

Hmmm...just spit-balling here, mayhaps you might be interested in being a shuttle driver next weekend?

But seriously, I hope it heals well and proper.

damn, that blows.
invest in a Scotts damper if you can....probably wouldnt have helped much on this one if the rear is what slipped, but it will save your ass for many moons to come.

I wonder if I would have avoided a break if I had upper body armor. Helmet worked, at least.

Thanks for good wishes, all.

Body armor usually wont prevent a collarbone beak....it will just reduce the road/trail rash.
How did you like Coral Canyon? I've been meaning to check it out. I prefer dez over track or woods/trail riding, but i heard CC has a good layout for riding.
Is it mostly 2nd/3rd gear riding or can you open the bike up out there?

I got a new CR250 over the weekend, but its geared for the dez, so not sure how it would work out there...my YZ is still geared stock so it might do better out there.

I'm still a n00b on motos so I was mostly 2nd/3rd. The trails are real fun though, and on some of the easier 4x4 tracks you can go pretty fast. We also ran through some 'black diamond' areas that had some steep rocky stuff. I had more fun going up that stuff, down was a little sketchy.

Post subject:  Body Armor (Motocross-style Chest Protectors)

I agree about the body armor not helping with collar bone and shoulder injuries.

What chest protectors are meant for is protecting you from roost (dirt and rocks kicked up by a spinning rear wheel) by the (motor)bike in front of you. Those pebbles getting kicked up by a spinning rear wheel get going really fast and they hurt. They're almost like bullets.

I don't like them becuase they hit me in the throat (ouch!). I don't even wear one on dirt bikes and just stay out of people's roost as much as possible.

Speedy recovery Paul. It's always that last run 'cause you can't do another :D

Yeah that's kind of what I figured. I fell just wrong enough that nothing would have mattered.

I've hurt my shoulder from low siding so I feel your pain. Get better soon.

After I hurt my shoulder, I did a lot of searches for how to fall from mountain bikes and motorcycles and the one thing that kept coming up was when you extend your hands to break your fall, all the force gets taken up by your collar bone. It's best to roll if you can.

I know it's easier said than done, but maybe next time you're flying through the air after a high side, you'll have a split second to think about how you're going to fall and prevent an injury by rolling.
