Started out at #2.

The guy was was a huge Texas jerk. Not to disrespect Texas, just that everything is bigger in Texas, and he was a bigger jerk than most. Didn't have any of the finesse or class of LeMond, and was embarrassing on an international stage (the man, not the rider).

Went from #2 to #3 when he dedicated his stage win to his fallen teammate who died in a crash. First indication, IMHO, this guy even though about anyone but himself. Quite a touching display actually.

Then cancer.

I would have moved the guy to #1 if he raised just $1 for cancer and never won a race, and we all know he's done far more than that. Cancer drugs are debilitating. To see someone get themselves back to an elite racing form after that kind of abuse speaks volumes, and deserves respect.

Don't know what they scooped out of his brain but certainly his pain center, and maybe a bit of arrogance. He's still not as diplomatic as LeMond, but he's far more polished than I thought possible from his early years. Most of the time. And always credited his teammates for his success during races. Hey wait, is this the same guy?


Raises millions for cancer. Is an inspiration to those suffering with the disease, or other diseases, that there is hope to regain your life back.

#1 baby, #1 all the way to Paris!!!


BTW- I have been to France on several occasions and the press there is (was) merciless regarding his alleged doping, although most of it can be seen hanging off the corner newsstands from the equivalents of the National Enquirer.

Tomorrow should be very interesting -- 138 mile stage with a beyond category mountain top finish. Lance's move a few days ago sets him up beautifully, too. Unless he falls apart early in the day, won't Contador have to ride in support of him? After all, Lance is up on him by 19 seconds. Lance may not have Contador's form, but he certainly is a smart bi' rider, as Paul Sherwen would say.

People make too much of this "designated leader." Zubeldia, Popovych, Rast, Muravyev, Paulinho are the domestiques who will be doing the bulk of the work. The group of Contador, Armstrong, Leipheimer, and Kloden will not become domestiques unless one of them happens to fall several minutes down. In 2007, Leipheimer did not start working for Contador until it became clear than Leipheimer was too far down on Rasmussen to really win.

Last year CSC-Saxo Bank had a three person attack with the Schleck brothers and Sastre. Even when Frank Schleck was ahead of Sastre before Alpe d'Huez, CSC-Saxo Bank still protected Sastre. They did not force Sastre to work for Schleck. This allowed Sastre to make the attack that won the Tour.

This season, Astana can do a four person attack with their top guys.

Good points OffRoadie.

With 6 riders within striking distance, and 4 riders in the top 5 spots, it's not an issue on the flats, but I guess the question is, who are the domestiques going to aid when the team begins to split in the mountains?

After Armstrong's help in the Tour de CA, I would suspect a buddy system with Lance and Levi.

As Canaan said, it's looking to be an interesting weekend in the mountains. :)

That's all true, but you have a slightly different dynamic with the Astana team having 2 of the top four riders having won the tour, and the other 2 having podium finishes. Never has a team been so stacked with talent. I suppose I was little loose with my language when I wrote that Contador would have to ride in support of Lance -- more accurately, Lance's move a few days ago made it, or should have made it, more difficult for Contador to attack. And don't think for a second that Contador is happy for Lance's success or vice-versa, although Lance showed a lot of class by sitting in and marking Cadel Evans when Contador took off.

Exciting today. You called it!

Contador was riding behind Lance's wheel for some time up the hill. Likely sizing him up before pulling the trigger.

It took a lot of class, and cunning, to not run with Contador. But I don't think Lance, or anyone else, could have matched Contador's last km. Had Lance tried, and failed, I think he may have looked more desperate than cool and classy (which he has become over the years).

Contador may have thrown down the gauntlet, but the game is far from over.

Wonder what the talk around the dinner table will be like tonight for Team Astana?
