The weather has gotten hotter recently and self preparedeness is essential to survive in this heat, especially while wearing full body armor, full face and so on. Today I had two riders that traveled 140 miles round trip, to ride some local freeride stuff. Halfway down, I look back to see if there all right and they were not trailing. I had to stop my downward momentum and hike back up only to find one rider nursing the other with his last water, at least it was not a golden shower, LOL.

I used the rest of my water on him also. We paused for 30 minutes to have him cool off. The updraft was helpful but he did nit hydrate properly. Anyone one of us can succumb to heat exhaustion if not hydrated properly.

I was on a force march in the USMC and had a Marine die in front of me because if heat stroke.

Please do no not become a victim on thes trails, know your limits. Please...

Any rider that comes up to ride with me from now on will have to down one quart of water before we begin.

No beer at the begginning this only leads to liquid courage, you have got to be on your A game bro. After we got back to the top we did do a toast with some good beer from NorCal, and some granola, which only attracted a swarm of hornets.

I have seen some other treaders give advice about staying hydrated, I'm just stealing thier thunder.

Heat exhaustion sucks... I consider my self in pretty decent shape, but I broke my self off just pulling hose on a hot tarmac because I did not properly hydrate after PT. I was puking all night, it made for a shitty day at work the next day.

No Doc around, how do you recognize and treat heat exhausion? I know to help that person recover you whanna get them into the shade, take off the the hot gear, offer small sips of water (start an IV of 0.9% NS wide open  ) and it would also be helpful to lie down and elevate the legs if people complain of feeling dizzy. Something I've always down is to add lots of ice to my bladder, in the camelback that is; there's nothing like getting a cool sip of H2O two hours into a ride..

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include the following:
• nausea
• vomiting
• fatigue
• weakness
• headache
• muscle cramps
• dizziness

Symptoms of heat stroke include the following:
• absence of sweating
• red or flushed skin
• shortness of breath
• rapid pulse
• hallucinations
• confusion
• agitation
• disorientation
• seizure
• coma

Seriously Take a First aid class, The Red Cross offers them pretty inexpensively. I am usually a weenie about blood and stuffs but I have used my training on the trail a handfull of times and knowing what to do helps bolster your confidence when you encounter the situation.
