I'm trying to design my own regimen for training off the bike.

I want to build core strength, power, improve balance, and increase flexibility.

This guy looks like he's on to some good kettleball routines.

Any suggestions for sites/vids to help me out.

My new gym is super well equipped.

Also has this apparatus....

They credit Navy Seals for inventing this but I suspect that inmates at US Prisons devised it.

Thanks!!

I surf to cross-train. Shortboards, not longboards. And kettlebells. But I'm not exactly the patron saint of fitness.

TRX is really nothing more than a take on gymnastics rings, with adjustable straps. Which I prefer BTW. The rings have a much more solid feel, and more possible hand positions. Plus, you can get a setup that duplicates the TRX for about 1/2 the price if you shop around.

Great question Lucy, what has worked for me recently is swimming to build the cardio. I only swim in a community pool but do 20 laps. If Im not swimming Im supersetting with iron and bands for the same workout movement only drinking water as rest between sets.

I am reading some weight training for cyclists book right now and it mentions that we should do abs before every workout. Highreps, smooth motion. It also said it is important to do it in this specific order; Lower abs, obliques, upper abs or else you could injure yourself. Otherwise it advises to err on the side of more reps, less weight.

The ex-Seal who invented the TRX is a brother in law to a good friend of mine in the Bay area. He does pretty well I hear selling those set ups. The military is a big customer.

It's not for everybody, but I do Bikram Yoga 2-3 times a week. Good for core strength, balance and flexibility. That's three out of your four. BTW Bikram is where they heat the room up to 105deg and start working(I call it cooking class). You'll burn 800 calories in an hour and sweat out five or six pounds.

Having given q bit more thought to your question, I think an excellent workout to compliment your San Diego Mtb training would be breaking rocks with a sledgehammer.

After all, mountain biking is a CRIME in San Diego county, so you might as well get a head start on the program!

Idk but when I'm pushing my steed up a steep slope, it feels like a workout. Bonus points for mtb mid-day heat for few hr.

That TRX looks very much like the nylon webbing and PVC pipe setup hanging off a tree limb in my yard for the last 20 years...total cost about $5 then...probably $10 now. Used to use it a lot, but obviously (if you know me) not in the last 10 years.

i found the elipticle (spelling?) machine amazing prep for technical and steep climbing if set on the steepest and more difficult settings, done in sprint type segments

bikejames is a great resource like dwill mentioned above.

Try out some of his workouts and see what you think. They've helped me become a better rider and a lot of the exercises are the same ones that are for crossfit.
