I had Friday off and was relatively near the area, so I checked in with an acquaintance that I rode with in Sequoia Nat’l Forest last fall. He was off and available, so some trail and skills riding was in order for the day. Arriving late morning in Kernville, I was already anxious to ride Jeff’s backyard but that would wait. We first took off from his house and a few minutes later we were at the Whisky Flat trailhead.

Hitting the trail, spring flowers are out.

Normally you’d have the option of riding across the logs, but not after recent winter storms.

More flowers

Then technical rock (click on for slide show).

Soon we reach his normal turn around point. But I’m all for exploring trails less traveled, so we pressed ahead.

Image

Jeff remarks that’s it’s been well over a year or so since he’s been out this far. But the trail soon delivers what we’re looking for (click on for slide show).

Image

So I hit it too.

We continue on with views of the Kern River below.

Then it’s time to head back.

But not before tackling a few more features.

And seeing more flowers.

Whiskey trail has enough terrain to keep everyone satisfied. Yeah, I’d be smiling too if I had this trail outside my door.

Back at Jeff’s house, it was time to eat lunch and gear up for FR skill building. I didn’t get to ride it last time I was here, so the first hour was spent mastering a couple of individual sections.

Jeff first demonstrates (click on for slide show).

Then my turn.

After some practice, my balance comes back on line. Then it’s time to link sections for real fun (click on for slide show).

Thanks a bunch Jeff!

And most homesites would sanitize any boulder rock. But there are a few homes in Ramona/SDCE that have similar rock like this their yards. So I'm waiting for one to go on sale w/ no HOA crap.

Thanks for coming up Sean. I had a great time. As it turned out, we had quite a bit of rain over the weekend so this was my main weekend ride. I think I would have missed out on riding if you hadn't called me.

Those slideshows you put together are cool. I'm going to have to figure out how do those. You can get a real idea of the flow.

You did very well on the skinnies. I have seen a lot of good riders come back here and make very little progress on those. You were doing most of then by the end of the day. I'm sure the fact that you had the right weapon for the job helped. The new Nomad is sweet. Nice job. We will get more features figured out next time.

It looks like you posted most of the good pictures. I will look through mine when I get home from work to see if I have anything else worth posting.
