Post subject:  Getting Out of the Comfort Zone

Went for a ride in the Double Peak area yesterday which started just east of the peak then downhill along the ridgeline and up and down Denk, back up to the start. There is lots of building, both residential development and trail, going on over there. There was also a lot of gasping for air (with the metallic taste of blood as a point of reference) as none of those trails are flat and I was riding with some very fast dudes, thus not one picture was taken.

After the ride, as we had some tasty beverages at the Pizza and Beer place by the Albertsons, I reflected on how satisfying it was to get challenged on a ride. Not only was it a compliment to the other guys, but it was true: I realized that I had not pushed myself so hard on the cardio side of things for probably a year, maybe more. And - now that the suffering was almost over (we still had to ride up San Elijo and Double Peak Roads to get back to the start and our cars) - I felt satisfied. Just a reminder to me that getting out of my comfort zone is something to be done on occasion.

Maybe others have similar experiences/insights? DT personal growth/self-improvement/mild bragging topic #1.

Nice, Mike. Those climbs in that area are brutal.
I have stopped bitching after every climb. That's a personal and mental improvement for me.

Well, until I went back to ride Vail Lake two weeks ago and had to ride up that stupid mindless wide open sustained fireroad climb - 3x. It was then I realized, it's quality not quantity of climb. Long live stimulating singletrack climbs.
