Not sure who has gone up and ridden the Cannell Plunge in Kernville before but if you like Nobel Canyon or the Palm Canyon Epic, you need to get up there and do this ride. A group of (9) of us went up there this weekend to do this ride and it didn't disappoint. It's generally run as a shuttle, although we did see (3) psychos climbing up the road, and is 24.5 miles long. This is basically Noble Canyon on steroids. You'll ride down through 3 or 4 different eco-systems and every imaginable type of terrain. You name it, this trail has it...ultra smooth twisty berm sections, loose & rocky, swoopy meadow trails like BLT. more loose and rocky, climbs of every nature (smooth, techy, fire road & even a HAB for good measure) and that's all before you drop on to the 7.5 mile "Plunge". The Plunge is fast, fast, fast on a narrow trail on the side of the mountain for the most part but watch yourself because there are techy rock drops and sections mixed in all over the upper half. After some nasty but fun techy switchbacks, it's time to haul the mail again. You'll be going so fast for so long that your brakes will start to fade which is the only reason I even bothered to stop. My rotors were so hot I was afraid to lay my bike down in the dry grass. After that, you're off again and it's more fast singletrack all the way back to the main road leading back to town. Less than a mile down the road before town is the brewery which apparently is awesome (I'm not a beer drinker) because all the others were raving about it. If you're interested, Kernville was 250 miles from my place in Oceanside, either up the 5 or 15. Going up the 5 took us 5 hours due to LA traffic. Coming home down the 395 & 15 took us 4 hours. The shuttle was $40 per person. There are campgrounds all over the place at every price point...even free if you're just overnighting it and don't need anything more than porta pottys. The Kern River runs right thru town of course so there are other things to do...float, soak, raft or whatever. The other popular shuttle up there is named Just Outstanding. It's not as long or "epic" but supposed to be more fun from top to bottom. We didn't have time to do it but did ride an area called Whisky Flat right on the edge of town that was 100% singletrack and flowy but not too challenging.
