It looks like the answer to this is ... Ride it while it's still got a little tech cause it's on the way out. One of my son's Cub Scout Pack dads is a Poway Park Ranger, I asked him what was happening up there (Iron Mt.) he told me that hikers were, and still are taking diggers (falling down), some getting hurt seriously; mostly on the way down the trail. Several law suits are pending and the Poway City Counsel and County of San Diego in typical San Diego bureaucratic style has taken the knee jerk reaction is doing what thinks is the best for the safety of the majority of people that use the trail (Hikers/Runners). There is more "Trail Enhancement", (his words not mine) on the calender. The City of Poway, and the County sees it as a public safety issue. He also said that there is a lot of preasure form another user group (He would not name them) to close the trail to Mt. Bikes altogther. If you've ever seen the parking lot on a sunny weekend, you will know that the Walking/Hiking crowd loves that place. Sometimes it looks like an ant trail of people on that trail.

^^^^^^^
seems the easiest answer might be to post signage:

'Iron Mt. trail contains several natural rock formations making some areas technically difficult. Proceed at your own risk.'

i am not a lawyer but it would seem if you are first warned about the technical issues, and then told if you proceed it is at your own risk it would be harder to sue the city. much less expensive too. but then, this seems way too simple an answer.

So by the "rangers" logic if one is bitten by a rattle snake it's the city of Poway's fault?

Oh wait, I think that's already happened. Didn't some woman get bit by a snake walking on the street sue the city and get a bunch of money several years ago?

Government Code Section 831.4(b)

Post subject:  Re: IRON MT....SANITIZED

thanks canaan. so let's have at it:

California Government Code Section 831.4

A public entity, public employee, or a grantor of a public
easement to a public entity for any of the following purposes, is not
liable for an injury caused by a condition of:
(a) Any unpaved road which provides access to fishing, hunting,
camping, hiking, riding, including animal and all types of vehicular
riding, water sports, recreational or scenic areas and which is not a
(1) city street or highway or (2) county, state or federal highway
or (3) public street or highway of a joint highway district,
boulevard district, bridge and highway district or similar district
formed for the improvement or building of public streets or highways.
(b) Any trail used for the above purposes.
(c) Any paved trail, walkway, path, or sidewalk on an easement of
way which has been granted to a public entity, which easement
provides access to any unimproved property, so long as such public
entity shall reasonably attempt to provide adequate warnings of the
existence of any condition of the paved trail, walkway, path, or
sidewalk which constitutes a hazard to health or safety. Warnings
required by this subdivision shall only be required where pathways
are paved, and such requirement shall not be construed to be a
standard of care for any unpaved pathways or roads.

seems it would be difficult to sue due to injury.

Seems too stupid that any judge would entertain a lawsuit regarding tripping on rock, stick , iguana... on any wilderness trail. People trying to sue for any such idiocracy should be fined and banded from any further reproduction :flame:

...wtf is our society come to.

People probably watching pron in 3D on their phone with a shake weight in the other hand while hiking up and falling. Or listening to music, running and not paying attention. Or any other multi-tasking thing.
Getting to the problem of multi-tasking. We all try to do it, and we all need to stop. We need to do one thing at a time and do a good job at it. I think many of the problems we have in society are due to multi-tasking. Everyone trying to get more done, but in reality getting less done in a day.

The sanitization blows but the reality is that 99% of the people at Iron Mtn are hikers. I like running it too and prefer it to be more technical but it's such a popular trail I'm not surprised they are working on it. Lots of old people, kids, and fat people on that trail. I think it's a lost cause and a better strategy may be too refocus to keep Ellie Lane rugged. Ellie probably gets <5% of the use Iron does, I usually only see a few people when I'm on it and they are more hardcore. It doesn't have the same view from the top as Iron, and most people aren't strong enough to do both, so I don't think it will ever be that popular for hikers.

Anyone own a sign shop? We need some of these at the trailhead, and a bell box too:

Get out there while you can. I was up there yesterday, and the CDF chain gang is really tearing it down.
