I got one of these Santa Cruz grease guns with my bike:
https://www.competitivecyclist.com/sant ... se-gun-kit

When I screw on the grease tube and press the thumb trigger, nothing happens, no grease, nothing. Random google searches tell me I need to "prime" the gun (how?) or possibly loosen up the front of the gun (why?). As far as I can tell, loosening up the front end does nothing unless you want to actually remove the front end. I am able to get the gun on/off the nub w/o much problem (push on pry off).

Can anybody give me step-by-step instructions on how these dang things are supposed to work? Yes, I'm dumber than a grease gun. I have tried calling Santa Cruz but keep getting a recording.

Thanks,
Mike

Is there a cap/cover on the grease tube itself that needs to be removed/punctured?

No, when I unscrew the grease tube I see grease. At the very least, I am smarter than the grease tube.

Thanks Dan, that looks pretty clear! I'll give it a shot tonight.

FWIW I have had bad luck with the Santa Cruz grease gun. I couldn't get enough pressure to make one of the zerk fittings receive the grease. The other was just fine. I always thought the fitting was jammed and I would have to replace.

I had to buy a real gun for our camp trailer. Just on a whim, I tried it on the bike. It generated enough pressure to free up the zirk fitting and grease the heck out of the bike like the original never could.

You can get all sorts of grease guns cheap at an auto-parts store. I couldn't feel more stupid after all that.

Thanks bankerboy, that's great to know. A quick Google search confirms that you are not alone with the frustrating experience you've had with the SC grease gun. I figured I owe it to myself to at least try the one I already have before going out and buying another one. I see grease guns on Amazon for $20 or so... can you believe SC charges $60 for theirs? <shakes fist>

Not quite, but I'm getting there. I've been doing 20-30 minute rides in Penasquitos Canyon 1-2x/week just to get my arm used to the bumpin' again but I don't consider myself back yet... mostly b/c I know that if I go riding with you all I'll have no self-restraint. :)

However, I am definitely close enough to spend way too much time reading DT, surfing Pinkbike, watching videos, and starting up some basic bike maintenance. I think I spent two hours just reading about tires the other day... My mind is ready but my body still says no.

My target return is mid-summer sometime... right when it's super hot and dusty. At least the beers will taste even better that way. ;) Can't wait to ride again with you all again!

Easy does it with yer comeback. After being sick and somehow gaining 15 lbs, my conditioning is for shit.
But I was feeling better- balance was back on a conditioning ride couple weeks back, so I decided to descend a trail in Florida C. that Roger and I call "Humiliation".

It nailed me but good. On the mend now mostly pushing them fat tires on pavement.
It's workin'.
