| Post subject: | Music on the trail |
Just wanted to get a discussion going about music while on the trail. Personally I think headphones should be banned, and lately I've noticed a lot of people riding with music coming from bluetooth speakers (even saw 2 people in a group, one in front of the other, playing 2 different songs). My thought is that music in any form is unnecessary and you should take advantage of time away from tech and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, 2 things that are hard to come by in urban San Diego. Thoughts? (This is not intended to start a bash-the-music-players thread. Just looking to start a discussion) |

I too get bugged by external speakers and clueless itards that can't hear their surroundings, but I don't support something silly like a ban. To each their own. If you want to be a goofball, then by all means, that's your right. And while there may be a small argument to be made that someone who can't hear you may cause some sort of danger, mountain biking is dangerous anyway. And we don't ban deaf people, so.... |

Ok, so a ban is a bit much, I agree. But maybe it should be strongly discouraged by good friends. And remember, deaf people can't help it, but music players can. |

I personally feel the same way you do re music on the trails, bu this here IS A-merica. However if one of my riding friends were to begin riding with either music or ear buds, that would make for one less riding pal. And that's not even a hypothetical. I already had to lose one. |

Most of the time I'd say I'm only mildy annoyed by music on the trail. The times I do appreciate it is when I can hear a rider coming through a trail that has bad sight lines such as Tunnels. I think headphones are very dangerous. Navigating around runners and iTards and the like is a serious issue in SD. Maybe one headphone and a mandatory 1hr course in Situational Awareness is a good compromise. Most runners and hikers I see on trails seem so surprised to have to share the trail. Banning is a bit extreme. |

Generally, I find the bluetooth boomboxes on trail annoying and intrusive. Nobody even does that shit at the beach or on picnics anymore so why blast your choice in music on the trail for chrissake. I remember doing that boombox stuff at the smoker's area in high school when I was looking for approval or attention. If you need approval or attention while riding, buy an Intense/Santa Cruz/Pivot/Specialized/etc. I said generally since there have been one or two times when I actually liked the song being played, but I'm not gonna follow a boom-boxed rider like a lemming just to hear the end of the song! If you can hear your music and I can't, no problem. |

^^^ All I would add is that I'd like other riders to be able to hear their music and me, especially when I'm climbing the hill they're bombing down. |

It is counterproductive to riding fast and descending upon someone that has earbuds on, so please take your earbuds off in the downhill portion of the trail and if your riding with me its best to follow the cadence of conversation. Conversing or calling cadence while riding or doing the Marine Corps shuffle regulates breathing very well. |

The music I listen to is the sound of my wheels grinding in the dirt, the squeal of the brakes, and the panting from utter exhaustion. Occasionally a rattlesnake provides percussion. |

There is so much noise already in our lives. You hear music played as ambient noise everywhere, fans on computers and air conditoning, car noises when we travel, construction machines everywhere, ... I go for rides on trails to get away from that noise. I take it as a personal insult when I encounter some asshat who is blaring a personal boom box because they are too fucking stupid to use earbuds. And then there are the people who are blaring music in their earbuds and cannot hear my bell asking if I might politely pass. I've even packed my rear hub bearings with grease to quiet the hub when I freewheel. I want silent running when I ride. I see so much more wildlife that way. I'm with Eric. If you must ride with music, use only one ear bud and leave the other ear open. And keep any of those awful boom boxes at home. |

I use earbuds at night for a stupid reason. I usually ride alone at night. Things that go bump in the night scare the shit out of me sometimes. If I cannot hear them, they are not there. Pure 5 year old mentality. Besides, if it all is going to go really south, hearing isn't going to change the outcome much. I usually keep my bell on to alert other users and the nice part is users have lights at night. It is an easy visual key that I/they are there. During the day, I occationally use earbuds but it is one in and one out. I keep my music to myself. Occasionally, I will break into an impromptu trail karaoke and share it with the world, but you will never catch me with a loudspeaker system on the trail. |
