No pics, so I guess it didn't happen, but if it did, I'd have posted sightings of a big fat (and disconcertingly confident) coyote at Calevara last weekend, a rattler at La Costa, and a young desert tortoise, also at La Costa. At least I think it was a tortoise. It wasn't a water-type turtle or a box turtle.

I pulled over to grab him before he was squished on Rancho Santa Fe. Another guy was already on top of the situation though and plucked him up first. He was going to take it home and give it to his kids as a pet. I let him know they may or may not be endangered, but were surely protected. He agreed to just show it to his kids and then do a little field trip hike up the hill to release it.

On today's route from Julian down to Eagle Peak Preserve and back, I saw a rafter* of wild turkeys; 2 baby snakes; numerous rabbits, squirrels and lizards; one horned lizard; several hawks; possibly a golden eagle; and 2 deer. ALL WITH MY CAMERA IN THE CAMELBAK :x

The deer on the right was right up to the log in the foreground when I rode up, but trotted back to its friend when I stopped to get the camera out. So the pic sucks.

Beautiful day for a ride up there.

* - Yes, "rafter" is the proper term. Although, I always thought the proper term for a group of turkeys was a "congress."

Okay, so this is not a photo I took on a bike ride. But my friend Carl took it in Idyllwild on Sunday, and it's a pretty cool critter shot.

any desert tortoise in that area is one that escaped from captivity or was released by bad owners. Definitely keep it, DO NOT RETURN IT TO THE WILD. There is a massive respiratory virus that captive tortoises develop and if released back into the wild they spread it. The desert tortoise population is being decimated by this epidemic. Good on ya for keeping the tortoise.

Saw this guy in Poway. I was climbing the hill across from Creekside school, heard a hiss and looked down to see him all coiled up. Looks like a California King snake.

Made me think how oblivious I usually am about snakes while I ride. I haven't really been so close to them before, but I'm sure I should be a little more observant.

Also made me think -- what do I do if I get bitten by a rattler? I don't have a clue...
