I've started riding a new-to-me trail by my house and I've seen these guys at one particular spot - kind of a micro-habitat I suppose. It's pretty cool. I've seen them there 4-5 times in fewer than 20 rides, and in the several years I've been riding elsewhere, I've seen them about the same number of times.

^^^ It doesn't do any good to stand on the seat, the crabs in this town can jump 10 feet.

Find the "critter" in the picture

I also saw two roadrunners and a Bankerboy but all were too fast to capture the picture

Wish I had my phone with me last night. Did the Strawberry Moon hike with Ranger Carey at Black Mountain. Hiked about 1/2 a mile up, listened to the nature talk when my kids asked "what is that light"

Two small lights in the brush, just off the trail. At first I thought it was the moon reflecting off of some minerals in the rock. Upon closer inspection, to small orange colored caterpillars, inchworm-looking were putting out the light from their butt/head (couldn't tell which end was what). Not very bright but it was definitely visible. I didn't know we had insects in SD that did that.

Anybody have any idea?

Good seeing you Mike. Sorry I didn't stop. We were on a race to beat the heat and we were loosing.

^^^ Yes. Very cool! Native, but rarely noticed. I've only seen 'em glowing once around here, and that was at least 25 years ago. Doesn't quite make up for our lack of fireflies though.

OK, a little research found this - Pink Glow Worm

Image

The light coming off the two I saw was not as green but rather a white/blue almost like a very dim LED.

Who knew we had them in So Cal? Apparently they are common but not often seen. I have only seen Fireflies once on a summer trip to Washington DC many years ago and that was pretty cool too.

HA! And I always thought my run-in with a deer in PQ all those years ago was exciting....

Read about this in the news today.

Last week, the day after the hottest day, I saw 30-40 snake imprints crossing the trails and fire roads of the Calavera back 40. Never saw anything close to that number before. Strangely, no live sightings (which I'm not complaining about). Slightly nerve-wracking, but does help you to remember to keep your eyes looking ahead!

I went out on a late ride today, about 11 am and saw plenty of snake tracks and heard several moving and rattling in the bushes in the porno and green shed areas. Definitely got my attention. On the bright side, I encountered several pretty equestrians out there, all friendly.

This guy just strolled next to my car this morning without a care in the world.
