I like carbon from an engineering standpoint - can build in stiffness or compliance as desired. I'm not sold on carbon as a frame material for a mountain bike though. Too notch sensitive.

I'm a bit of a weight weenie but I'm willing to saddle myself with a 1lb of frame weight in this case.

The Anthem weighs in at 27lbs for a large frame size. Rims are fairly wide and the stock spokes are straight gage. There's room to trim there.

The Giant is a screaming deal too.

Recalls 2011 Anthem between $2,200 and $3,500.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop riding the recalled bicycles and contact any authorized Giant Bicycle dealer for a free inspection and repair.

You should watch the video on the Niner site where their carbon fork is treated with a hammer - may change your mind on "notch sensitive"

As for 29er full suspension bikes I'd want, I have my eyes on the Banshee Prime. Downside is that I will have to wait another year for it to become available.

Carbon is a great material if you never gouge it. I don't own my own graphics company, work in bio-med, or dine exclusively on Tecolote poison oak burritos so I can't justify having uber expensive disposable bike frames. if I'm spending that much on a bike it has 12 inches of suspension front and rear and goes like stink when I flick my wrist.

Giant Bicycles, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, announced the voluntary recall of its 2011 Anthem 29ers.

According to a release issued Saturday by the CPSC, the frame on the Anthem poses a risk of cracking at the juncture of the seat tube and top tube.

The CSPC notes that no injuries have been reported.

The bikes went on sale in August and consumers are advised to stop using the bikes until contacting an authorized Giant dealer or the company at its website.



The recall dates back to last November and I'm assured all units on sales floors are post "recall".

Giant also has a lifetime warranty on the frame in case a problem arises in the future.

Giant's not likely to go out of business tomorrow (unlike the mfr of the bike I just sold - who had a well known problem with cracking rear triangles on it's no.1 selling model - and never issued a recall notice during the lifespan of that model).

I take delivery next week - if it implodes and I bust my ass you have permission to ridicule me mercilessly.
