There's this idea that as things become more common, they come to be accepted as "right" or normatively correct (the most recent example of this is same-sex marriage) -- not so long ago, anything other than 26" wheels was seen as weird. When I was prepping my bike for tomorrow night's ride it occurred to me that in a two-week time span, 29" wheels looked "right" to me, and 26" wheels looked "wrong." I wonder what the next "normal" will be.

Normal is only what we are manipulated to accept.

Interesting post. I didn't know the term for it until now. I was thinking it was more along the lines of desensitization. I never thought this way in terms of bikes though. More so, with TV scenes that I don't approve of watching and fast forward through.

It's a great turn of a phrase that has a lot of applications, especially when it comes to groupthink.

So do those 29er wheels make it easier to navigate a slippery slope?

Government control of the internet. The new normal? No thanks.

Funny, I've had a Tallboy since 2011 and I still don't think 29er wheels look "normal".

....and I still don't agree that 98% of what has become "normal" the last 6.5 years is "normal".
