So I've managed to find the "sweet spot" on my SS when mashing up inclines. I noticed there is a position where I get my weight in front of the crank and I can perpetuate motion without wrenching on the bars as much. On steeper climbs, this spot seems harder to reach with basic riser bars. After the past couple weekends and the pain I have in my wrists and elbows, It looks like I'll need a bar that is a bit wider with somewhere to grab onto in a more forward position as well. Hopefully that'll help me get more of my weight over the front end. I've looked at these 3 so far. Anyone have experience with these or any other brand recommendations? Pros? Cons? Thanks!

looks like the mary pushes more forward than the fubars, and its almost the same as the h bar by way of the forward most grab point positions. would be nice if i could see an h bar in person, figuring out where to put the controls is confusing me.

i havent tried any of the FU Bars but i do own the Mary's and i love them. Looking at the pic you posted the FU Bar looks closest to the Mary's i love them easy to pull yourself up and hammer

ec has the fu bars. i'm sure he'll comment.

oh, and phonger has the h-bar, so you should have it covered.

i've been wanting marys for a while now. i don't think i'll be changing hand positions, but i think the position would be good for mashing up a climb. plus the glossy will go better with the thompson...

Well, after looking at more detailed pics of these options, I've ordered the H bar. it looks like it has the most distance variant from rear to front, and since I do intend on changing hand positions for steeper climbs (and i hate bar ends), that seemed like the right way to go. I will report back with a review once I get a couple rides with it : )

PS, i got it for $80 shipped which seemed like a good deal in comparison to most places. If you agree and are interested I'll post up the vendor.

So here's the skinny on the Titec H bar:

PROS:

-WIDE. According to spec they're wider than the other ergo bars.

-Very comfy thanks to their geometry.

-Rearward sweep is awesome for getting further behind the seat on steepie drops.

-All the extra stuff going on gives you alot of options for hand positioning during climbs or if your arms are getting pumped.

CONS:

-You will most likely need longer cables/housing/hydro lines for your brakes due to the wierd angle that your levers mount.

-Welds between grip and control section are beefy enough to push your levers far enough away from the grips where you may have to 1 finger them if you have small hands.

-I have no idea where the heck I'd mount shifters if I had any.

All in all, I give these a thumbs up. They definitely feel better than the basic riser I was running and my arms aren't as beat up after a long ride. Mission accomplished! They do take some getting used to though. Particularly since you kinda have to relearn your brake modulation. They're not much heavier than the Ti version, although the Ti version has smoothed welds which will help get your controls a bit closer to your grips.

Well, after riding the Misfits for 5 months, the extreme sweep handlbar experiment is over!

Pros: Great for really smooth XC riding. Also great for out of saddle climbs.

Cons: Technical riding or fast DH gets very dicey, fast. Going over tech trail features, I've continaully had my hands slide forward, losing control. On drops, jumps or steeps that require ass over the saddle, I've encountered the opposite, with hands sliding off the bar. A couple weeks ago, I actually slid right off the bike, landed on my feet and the bike kept going.

So, [for me!] the extreme sweep handlebar was great in theory, but in practice, I learned why MTBs come with straight bars. Since the SS is my only bike at that moment, I'm switching back to straights. However, once I get back on a proper 6" 26er again, I'll throw the FUbars back on the SS for the tamer, more XC orientated stuff.

Sniffer, I dont know if you ever made a decision on bars, but if you want, you can borrow my titec h-bar and try them out on your bike. I've taken them off and now use Salsa pro-moto flat bar with 17 degree sweep. Let me know and maybe you, me, and dooder can have a SS mash fest (no Sloths allowed).

I have been kinda dissatisfied with the On-One Marys. They are awesome for climbing, but they don't do much else well. I haven't noticed anything dangerous, but they hurt my hands because of the angle. I like my monkey bars better.

The forward sweep is supposed to let you keep your current stem, but I swear they're a little further out than my monkey bars were.

I'll keep the bars on my SS. It's not bad enough to warrant buying more bars.

You can join the SS mash fest, but you have to stay in one gear.

Bar ends? Weak sauce!
