So I've been thinking of converting my old 26" ht to a SS.Anyone have a 26" SS.

I've also been eyeballing a 29er SS.Just trying to stay sub 1000.

I like the Redline Monocog.

Any other recommendations?

uhm, there's this guy on here selling a khs solo one for, like, next to nothing. you could buy it, try out singlespeeding and upgrade to a higher end bike it if you find you're into that kinda thing selling the khs for what you paid for it (eventually).

just trying to help a brother out!

I converted an old Specialized Stumpjumper and rode it for a while when my trail bike was down. It is fun to do the conversion, but you end up adding parts to make it truly trail worthy if it is an older bike.

Then I rode a friend's rigid 29 SS and really liked it. I have an order in on a 2008 Raleigh XXIX that I got for $700 out the door. I looked at the Redline Monocog, Haro Mary and KHS Solo One. The Raleigh has a good steel frame, disc brakes and an EBB. That way I have the option of adding a suspension fork or going 1x9 in the future and the 2008 was about $250 cheaper than the '09 with the same spec. Should be here by Friday....

I have an XXIX and a few complaints:
-Small frame doesn't fit a large water bottles on the seat tube mount
-front wheel toe overlap (may fault for being a Smurf)
-stock Exiwolf tires not so great
-heavy, heavy, heavy (29 lbs...for a SS?!)
-geomery NOT suspension corrected. Purring a suspension fork on it will increase the turning radius, making it less nimble
-paint chips super easy

I commute to school on it and take it out for the occasional group ride. I wouldn't race on it, but it's fun to beat on. For longer rides, it needs a suspension fork. BAD.

I think the Monocog 26'ers can be found relatively cheap, 500-600. Zumwalts has had the 29'er version and I saw a couple 26'ers at a shop off of Broadway in La Mesa. If I remember right they were 499. I can't remember the name, but its located off of the 94 and College. I could show you the shop if you wanted.
You could always just add a tensioner, cog and spacers to your old Hardtail for cheap too. I have a converted SS and love it.

Go with Surly 1x1. If you want to test ride mine to see how you like it, just call 619-502-0606.

The Redline Monocog is a great first 29er SS. I see them on CL all the time for cheap. Try to get something in steel if you can.

I meant 17" haha. OH Man I love this crowd.

I built up my 26" HT Giant so will give it a go for a while.

I need Hi Rise handlebars as those narrow straight, had me shaking my head as to how I rode those before.
