Another reason for dispersed camping options Yeah we booked it a few months ago, I am sure it is fully booked by now. We will be there the 9th - 12th. If you wander into the campgrounds and see a black suburban with a white Fleetwood Prowler trailer say hello. I will be with the family so no Nobel for me, but I will try and get in a ride at Gatos Ravin and maybe a loop of the meadow. This will be my first time camping at Rancheria, as I said we usually do Laguna Campground. I totally get that feeling of being more alone by not being in a campground, but that is also harder to do. If you are up for a drive, there is an amazing place for dispersed camping up in the Southern Sierra's. It is one of the few places where you can drive into the back country. Monache Meadows. It is on the way to Mammoth, just past where the 14 and 395 merge. Turn up 9 mile canyon road outside little lake and pick up your fire permit at the Black Rock Ranger station. The Monache Jeep Trail starts a few miles from the Black Rock Ranger station and heads north into the Valley below Olancha Peak. The South Fork of the Kern river runs through there as does the PCT. I have never Mountain Biked up there and it has been a very long time since I camped there, but man it is pretty dang remote and absolutely beautiful. You wont be pulling a trailer longer than 4 or 5 feet out that jeep trail and you would need good ground clearance on it anyway. |

Free camping at corral canyon. Not dispersed, it's still a campground but should fit a small trailer. Have you looked at vans at all? That's what I'd get if one would fit in my garage. There are a couple companies that have pre made kits for bare vans. Trailers can be a hassle with dispersed sites that have narrow roads and unknown turnarounds. Can only do 55 on the freeway too |

Can only do 55 on the freeway too I like the van idea except when you bounce around to ride different trails every day....like my group does when we ride in SW Utah. With a trailer, you can park and leave it as you drive away in your truck to go get pizza in town....and come on now, nobody's driving 55.

My trailer thought is this: Lets say I wanted to ride in Utah. Drive the tow vehicle to Utah, rent a trailer there, drag it to where you want to go, drive it back to the rental place, and head home (over 55 MPH) Really not looking at owning and/or storing one at this time. For anywhere from 70-130 per night you can rent and give it back when done!  Tfitz and my sons friend have a van and they are great but I just don't have the room for it. I want to move to have a place to store one but buying a home now and finding one we like has been years in the making already. |

There's also places where a company will rent the trailer and tow it to where you want it parked for the week/weekend. There a few listings on VRBO that do this in the Hurricane area for sure. I know friends that have used them at Glamis and Ocotillo during my desert days. They have to exist in other locations. It will just take more research. |

Another option may be Air BnB. My wife and I have stayed in everything from cabins in the woods at the end of dual dirt tracks with wood stove heat and a hot plate (see below) to a converted garage a block from the surf in Santa Cruz or even a 1 bedroom economy flat in Seattle’s CHOP. Probably getting close to a dozen different sites now. Rarely interact directly with the owners, but all stays have been very pleasant to outstanding up to this point.

All good suggestions: * Air BnB - my wife have stayed in these a number of times in a number of locations. Always had a good experience. * Rent a trailer at the location - The downside to this over owning one is you cannot store stuff in the trailer itself, you have to pack and unpack your car/truck everytime, but the idea of them delivering it to the campsite and picking it up is great for those who are daunted by trailering. To the point about driving 55, that only applies to California, other states have different rules. That said this was always a sticking point for me when my wife wanted a trailer and I wanted a slide-in truck bed camper. Turns out I am very comfortable driving the trailer at 65-70 and have yet to have any problems with the law. I even got pulled over doing about 60-65 on the 395 last year heading to Yosemite and the sheriff was only checking to make sure i was not driving drunk or falling asleep. The wind was causing the trailer to move around a bit. On the way home from that trip our group caravanned down the 99 and we were all doing close to 80mph when the road was flat and there was no cross wind. It is all about conditions. With higher winds you gotta go slower. As to vans I think the biggest downside was already presented, it is the same downside to a roof-top tent. If you need to go anywhere you gotta break camp to a certain degree. But that could be acceptable for some and not for others. Before we had the trailer we tent camped, so all the camping gear was stored in the Garage and it took a while to load up to leave for camping and a while to unlead when we got home. Now that process is much easier, can slowly be done over the course of a few days and most of the camping gear we stored in the garage is now in the Trailer 100% of the time. I was always the one who was trailer resistant, but once our second child came along who does not sleep well and after camping with the need to change diapers on the floor of a tent I agreed to it and am super happy with the decision. |

I am really liking all this great discussion and information! Personally I have been a bit semi-obsessed with the whole #vanlife thing for a while. There's something about having your own personal mini-house that's also reasonable easy to drive in/out of town. Some pros/cons of vans have already been discussed, but there is one major PRO that nobody has mentioned so far: BIKE SECURITY As much as I love mountain biking, it has for sure added more than a touch of paranoia to my life. There's no way I'm going to throw our bikes on our hitch rack, drive to some cool new area, and then casually stop into some cool brewery or diner for an hour or so with our bikes totally exposed. Cable locks can easily be cut with hand-held cutters, and even chains can be easily cut these days with hand-held LiIon grinders. Most of us make it a point to always sit somewhere we can see the bikes in the parking lot, but if somebody decides to do a quick smash and grab, the odds aren't great that I'm gonna be able to jump out of my seat and run over there in time to stop them. And frankly, I don't want to deal with it... I'd rather relax and not worry about it. With a van, you can hide your bikes/gear in the back and close/lock the door and nobody knows if the van is full of expensive bikes or smelly clothes (well, maybe both). The problem I have with the truck + trailer combo is that your bikes are going to be very exposed in the bed of the truck. The exception to this is if you buy a "toy hauler" trailer, but for the most part those are fairly large... it's hard to find smaller ones. |

not really. Just put your bikes in the trailer. Put a heavy duty chain lock on them (maybe w/ a genie locked between. Good luck schlepping two bikes chained together with a genie out of a trailer door. More secure than a van I'd think. |

Where would you put the bikes in the trailer? Most trailers I've seen are designed to maximize the living space. There's no dirty storage area (exception: toy hauler). Are you going to put your muddy dirty bikes in the middle of your living room or kitchen? |

Bring an old blanket or sleeping bag laid on the bed for the bikes. To save a spot I have left as little as a chair and honor the same. You can pitch a tent or ground covering. I set up a lot more with the trailer maybe an hour. With a van I keep it down to five minutes now. I still have an old trailer but if I get a newer one it would be a fiberglass egg.  It’s easy to pull over stop for lunch cook in the van go to sleep without ever getting out of the vehicle. |

I really like the van idea but I personally don't have the place to park one at this time. Checked Burnt Ranchita and they are booked up through Sept. for the spots you can reserve. Back to my dispersed camping ideas
