Post subject:  Looking to Borrow a Headset pop out and pop in tool
Hey All,
I'm building up a fun SS 29er with some old dinosaur parts, but I need to replace the headset. Does anyone have a pop out tool and the headset insert tool I can borrow? I could bring the bike with me and do it at your house as well.

Or I may just need to replace the top bearings and top cap (Cane Creek), so that will require less tools.

Also, are BB& brakes still a thing? I might pull the hydraulics off this bike and make it a super low maintenance one with mechanical discs.

You can knock them out with a hammer and drift from the other end, and press them back in with a tool made from all-thread and big flat washers, or even carefully whack them in with a hammer and wood block. The key is to watch carefully and stop and correct it right away if it isn’t going in perfectly straight. There are lots of articles and videos on how to do it.

I made a tool just like Dan's describing, and it worked very well. Just a long bolt with big washers.

I also made a tool to put the piece on the fork out of a big galvanized pipe nipple with a step-down union on one side. Gravity alone works for that since it's a little heavy.

As to your second question, yes BB7’s are still a thing for some people named tfitz ( :wink: ). I have a set on a really old bike and agree they are reliably low maintenance. But I wouldn’t spend any money on new ones if the hydraulics you have are working. I prefer one-finger hydraulic brakes — BB7’s are decidedly two-finger for me. But if your hydraulics are troublesome, yeah, go BB7 or budget Shimano hydraulics, which can be had for the same cost, or even less.
