I don’t know why, maybe I just haven’t ridden it enough yet, but the bars & grips on my new bike feel pretty good so far.

Here’s a shitload of alternative bars with even more sweep than the PNW Range, for anyone thinking about that.

Well, sure enough, I hadn’t ridden it enough. After riding several days in a row on my other bikes, I took the Pivot out for a spin and my wrists were hurting. I installed today, same as on my Kona, PNW Range bars (which have 10mm more rise & 2 degrees more backsweep) and Ergon GA-3 grips and went for a ride. It felt much better, and not just because it felt familiar.

This not only makes sense, but is pretty entertaining too.

Sometimes an old dog learns a trick, but forgets it…

On my newest Pivot SL, it felt good right away, but I knew my wrists would suffer, so put new Ergon grips on immediately. So now after about six weeks I’m thinking, gee my shoulders have been hurting. Damn, the bars feel great, but must be too wide. But measured and compared, same width as my Kona and 1/2” narrower than my Switchblade. Hmm. The suspension isn’t too stiff…hmm. I rewatched that video above and did the “pencil test” and my protractor said 15 deg. So I ordered another pair of PNW bars with 10deg backsweep…again.* Duh.

*So maybe I’d like the SQ Labs 12 or 16deg bars better? But, that much backsweep puts you farther back, and the PNW are half the price, with lifetime warranty vs two years. And I know I like them. Easy choice.

Maybe I should’ve waited….PNW just came out with their Loam carbon bar to compete with OneUp (and same 10deg backsweep as the Range), made for vertical compliance and lateral stiffness and extensively tested. It is $149 (ten less than OneUp) and comes with a lifetime warranty (OneUp is two years).

Pretty sure if my OneUp’s fail l won’t be needing much of anything let alone new bars for free!

Oddity Cycles makes a very similar bar (in steel and Ti)

Like so many things bike-related right now, including entire nice bikes, the aluminum Range bars & stems are 40% off. Perhaps also a predictable consequence of PNW coming out with a carbon version.

If anyone wants a big backsweep bar like SQ Labs, but hankers after the damping qualities of carbon, I just ran across this one.
