My two cheap but bright headlamps failed after an hour on a grom ride recently, so I did some research and bought a new Outbound Lighting Hangover. Yesterday I fully charged every old headlamp I had and took them for a night ride to test them. So I had three on the bars. A Chinese Solarstorm three-LED about four years old, an original MagicShine about ten years old, and a NiteRider Trail Rat probably close to twenty years old. The new Outbound was on my helmet.

I rode 1 1/2 hours, and ran the lights on high for an hour. The Trail Rat is only 10W and relatively heavy, but it worked. Dim to start with and a faint glow by the end. The Solarstorm is very bright with a pretty wide beam, but I think it overheats or has some other electronic problem. It will just go out, but might come back on after unplugging or switching batteries. The MagicShine worked great, although the battery probably doesn’t hold as much charge as it used too (I ordered a new battery), and it is very bright but the beam is too much like a spotlight.

The Outbound was awesome as expected. It’s like a floodlight that covers a wide area, just brighter in the middle and really reaches out there. I used to like one light on the helmet plus one on bars, but I think this one is all I’ll ever need. It’s self-contained but you can add a USB charge pack to extend it.

I know you all have your favorite brands, but if you need a new light, check it out.

Avidtest - true, but it's still dark when you get up!

OldDogDan - With the Outbound, are you mounting it to your bars or helmet? Bars I'm assuming?

ODD: Nevermind my question. I went to the website and the Outbound is helmet mounted, although they also have a "Trail" light for the bars (and a package deal to buy both).

^^^ Yes, I prefer helmet mount (I included a not-very-good photo of it above on my helmet). It uses a GoPro mount, and comes with an adhesive mounted one, but my Giro helmet already had a snap-in mount which works great. There are also lots of GoPro mounts available for handlebars. If only using one light, the helmet is best because it’s higher, so ruts are better illuminated, you can see farther, see around corners, look at odd noises in the bushes (!), and work on your bike. Only downside is blinding your friends when you turn to talk to them. The Outbound Hangover is light and has no wires, eliminating two common complaints about helmet lights.
