I had previously posted that I was able to successfully do a lowers service (dust wiper & oil change) of my wife's Pike fork (hooray). I'd now like to do the same thing on my Fox 36 fork which is a 2018.

One thing that was really nice about the Pike service was that Rockshox provides manuals which show you exactly how to do everything. Unfortunately, the Fox website doesn't seem so friendly. When I go to the website and punch in my item code (DB3J) I can get instructions on how to do things like air spring rebuilds which I'm fairly sure are beyond my pay grade. However, I don't get anything for lowers maintenance.

I was, however, able to find a video on 2015-2017 dust wiper and bath oil service, which is exactly what I want, except for the fact that my fork is a 2018:
https://www.ridefox.com/fox17/help.php?m=bike&id=571

Does anybody know if Fox changed their maintenance procedures so that the 2018 forks would have different procedures on the dust wiper and bath oil service compared to previous models?

thanks!

I think you should be able to find it on Fox web site but I'm sure it's the same.
Remove air
Loosen bolts on bottom
Tap to break the rod loose
remove bolts
Slide lowers down
Remove seals, clean it all up
Install correct fluid and amount
Soak foam
Install foam and new seals
reassemble

Check YouTube also
Celebrate with a frosty :drunk:

More googling, but if in doubt do what Harley says.

Thanks! Regarding the above instructions, Fox sells a special tool (https://www.jensonusa.com/Fox-DamperAir ... moval-Tool) that you can thread on to break the rods loose. The only problem is that it's $50 which I think is exorbitant, and I need two of them b/c the bolts are different sizes on my fork.

There are other instructions out there (https://www.mbr.co.uk/how-to-2/fox-36-service-358707) which show that you can take a hit a socket pressed against the loosened bolts to do the same. Have you ever tried this technique?

thanks!

Many times without issue.
Loosen the nuts until they have a couple of threads showing but not at the end of the rod
Place the socket on the nut and tap it to break the rod loose
Then you can remove the nuts and lowers.

The first time I did it I was really concerned like you must be but really, it's that easy.
Many YouTube's show the same process

NOTE: Do NOT tap on the rod without the nut protecting the threads !

Good luck!

Thanks a lot Inconceivable. After the long weekend beating and constant riding, I'm feeling guilty of not servicing the suspension for a while.
Planning on doing both ends this weekend.

Please don't post anything to do with the bottom bracket

Wouldn't the bottom bracket be a lot easier? :)

I'm guessing you never replaced one before?

Hoping I didn't jinx myself here

Believe it or not I actually have, although I should state that all my bottom brackets are threaded. If you're dealing with a pressfit BB, then goooooooood luck to ya!
