Favorite Trails: All of Los Penasquitos
Hey guys!

My name is Dante and I have been riding bikes for as long as I can remember. I worked as a tech at Bicycle Discovery a few years ago during the summer, and built a bunch of different bikes.

I've had a few bikes in the past, but the most recent is this 10+ year old Schwinn Mesa. It's been pretty good to me so far but I might be looking to upgrade very soon.

Recently I've been getting into mountain biking again. Currently, Los Peñasquitos Canyon is my favorite all-around trail. Still have to repair the bike after each ride out there, though! :x

I look forward to talking to you guys and asking your advice ('cuz I will need it - badly!).

/Dante

Welcome, I frequent PQ a lot since I live in Mira Mesa. You should check out black mountain sometime too.

I am also trying to unload a bike. I will PM you.

Wow thanks for the warm welcome, guys! :D Nice to finally find a forum that has friendly people in it!

When I get free time I'll pm some of you guys and maybe we could do a ride!

I'll definitely check out the North Side of PQ - would be nice to have a change of scenery.

Thanks guys! :)

Thanks for the offer, but I can't put down the money just yet! I gotta still do some saving lol.

Also, last year I tried Black Mountain - I had an accident at the top and I had to be helicopter-ed out of there - not a fun experience and I don't wanna even think about doing that again haha! :?

Sorry >.<

Details, you can haz!

It was October of last year. After repairing my bike I wanted to try a new set of trails. I went to Black Mountain and pedaled and climbed my way to the top just to see how high I could go. Feeling good, and well-fed and well-hydrated, I got to the very top where all the radio gear, etc is located.

I tried to get off my bike to rest but struggled; then once I had finally had my feet on the ground, I simply collapsed! Everything kinda went hazy for a while, and it was probably half an hour before I was conscious again - enough so to call my parents for help. Since they couldn't exactly take a car up to the top they tried calling the park ranger, but he could't help because it was his day off. Nobody else was on the trail so it was just me and the dirt and the beating sun.

I went numb in my face and my whole body, but i was able to get a call out to 911. They had to send a helicopter to get me, but the helicopter couldn't find me. So I used the little energy I had left to signal them with my knife. They landed so close to me, I could see the spinning blades overhead. They carried me in and flew me down, then took me to the hospital.

4 bags of IV later and I was able to go home, but I felt like I had had a concussion for the following week.

Turns out I had heat stroke and it happened so suddenly, my body wasn't telling me to slow down. Pretty scary stuff!

(How's that for details?)

/Dante

Wow Dante, glad you're still around to tell the story! You said you started out well-hydrated, so did you also have water with you to drink along the way? Any other contributing factors? Just wondering because, like shredder said, lot's of us are out there in hot weather pushing ourselves to the limit. Your unfortunate story serves the rest of us as a reminder of what can happen if we're unprepared. Glad you had your cell phone handy too, since that may have saved your life.
