Calavera Trails Coalition has our first opportunity to begin work alongside CDFW. While I will not sugar coat or hide that riding is still viewed as "Illegal" this is an opportunity to start building relations and show good will and ownership of the land.

As of posting this I don't yet have details on what work will be done, Gabriel has said he will be working on the North Side of the Volcano. Once I have more details I will share them.

I'm not yet sure if I will be able to attend, but I hope a few people will attend and be on their best behavior, keeping in mind we are starting from ground zero to build a productive working relationship with CDFW.

Honest question: I thought that the Volcano was off limits for all trail users?

Snarky question: Will hikers & bird watchers join in to build MTB trails?

Based on discussion with CDFW, there was never really a trail system mapped for this property and they are now working to establish something. So basically, at the moment all trails are open to anyone on foot.

Answering the snarky question: probably not, but as we build the "Trails Coalition" we sincerely Hope it will cross over all user groups.

Right now we (bikers) are still generally viewed as destroyers of land and not doing anything to help improve trails (jumps are viewed as a hazard and the dirt used comes from nearby and causes more destruction). We need to do some good to build our image for CDFW and the other Conservationists, etc.

As noted, I'm not sugar coating or trying to hide anything. Up front this is probably work on trails we don't use, and future work may even include removing jumps/features. But if we are involved it can be done in a better way for our interests.

I don't disagree, but it is what it is and they own it, so we are trying to figure out how to get our interests included.

I'm with ya Clyde....I think we'd have better luck working with Carlsbad to get new trails built on that Hillside below & adjacent to Monkey Flower

IMHO - no 'new' trails will be built by the lake. It is a restoration from here.

Thanks for posting this. It would be great if some mountain bikers show up, but as you say, only on best behavior. Diplomacy definitely needed. I’m guessing the “trail work” will be erosion control or maybe even blocking off redundant trails. Probably not what we’d enjoy, but good for developing a relationship. I can’t make this on a Friday as I’ll be working.

Why on Friday? Seems like the land management agencies have no clue how to best get volunteers to help do their job for them.... The last official CDFW trail work day was done on a Saturday and about 100 Mountain Bikers showed up and helped move rocks and perform erosion control on the Spine. I know as I was one of them. The vast majority of Mountain Bikers are not retired and have to work mid-week....

I would be happy to help, but I cannot afford to take PTO to do so, I have to save it for family trips.

I hope at least a few of those with more flexible schedules can go. I would recommend you ride to the base of the sign and then push your bikes to the work area. Show to Gabe and anyone else who is out there that it is Mountain Bikers helping with the work. We all know not a single "hiker" or "Birdwatcher" will be out there for back breaking work in the heat.

I am curious as to what they mean by the north side of the volcano, that is literally the cliff into the Quarry.... My guess is they will be trying to block off the hiking trail, made by hikers that runs the rim of the quarry?

I appreciate the time & effort put into this to "mend fences" but personally, I see it as a one-way street and MTB'ers are allowed on that street.

This is the wrong day of the week to have a trail day for the reason above^
This is the wrong time of the year to be digging if that is what is to be performed
Was any thought put into those two obvious items? Looks like the same planners for this habitat are handling this trail day.

You are better off spending your time digging post holes for more trail closure signs. It will be less work, take less time, and have the exact same outcome for mountain bikers.

Not a slam on those trying to move forward (Thank you, really) but I'm not willing to work here at this time. I'd spend time on Blk Mt clearing brush back on open trails that need the work so everyone can enjoy them, not excluding a group of tax payers that get nothing for their money.

Guys,

I am well aware the inconvenience of having a weekday trail work, but we are talking about government employees who are doing work during their work week. Same goes for city of Carlsbad.

As far as what is being done, I don't yet have an expected scope of work.

Keep in mind, we are starting off on the back foot. We currently have No legal access to ride or work on any trails. We are doing what we can to build relations so hopefully come winter, we might be allowed to work independently on "hiking" trails. If that means we have to do some grunt work in areas that don't concern us as much, so be it.

If our group can be seen as willing to help without drama, we can become trusted, so we can begin doing trail work.

Take Ted's for example, they have started helping the CDFW ranger remove invasive species plants.

We are working hard at all levels to make changes. Lack of engagement plays into our opponents hands, while gracious, selfless work supports our cause.
