There used to be a bumper sticker

667 bicyclists fell off their bikes in Oregon last year and drowned.

Couldn't find an image. This'll have to do:

Evan, what's the deal with the mojo?

That looks a lot like a Mojo for sale that sierragoldens sent Evan info on. A smokin' deal on a practically new one that was built up pretty nicely. I said I would buy it if it wasn't so similar to mine!

Evan said he'd have to improve his skills before he had a bike like that - so I trust he's been hammering on his skillset.

So fill us in evdog, didja get that one?

Rob you obviously didn't ride the last 10 days, didn't you notice your bike was missing from the garage?

Couldn't be, I keep it next to me in bed.

Stoked on the Super D run shots. Mmm....swoopy.

Now for Day 2... (on the evdog/Deno/406 time scale). Still on Day 1 on the GP_pilotian time scale. But regardless, this is now Lap 2 on the day. I offered to drive on Lap 1 since the trail sucked so bad, giving Deno and 406 the misfortune of having to ride this trail 3x.

We are now in big tree country
Image

As I would have some time before meeting the guys at the pickup spot I went for a cruise above the ski area to see if I could find Time Warp, an extra-credit FR trail higher up. I was rewarded with this view on the backside of Mt Ashland.
Image

The road going straight up the hill is the route to Time Warp. Not happening today, as you also must traverse a ridgeline that would be buried even deeper.

In the foreground is the new steed. However I had to swap out the inferior XTR cranks, the crap seatpost, poser bash guard, and then mismatch the brakes to make the build legit. Robo, you want that stuff back?
Image

Having picked up the guys we were back up for Lap 2. Thanks to Stang for sitting this one out.

Definitely in big tree country. Deno is impressed
Image

Not just the size of the trees is cool, they're gnarly too
Image

Inconspicuous berm on the fire road section
Image

We checked out an alternate FR line we'd found on Day 0. GP_pilot and Deno kept going down. The rest decided we were losing elevation too fast for an optimal reward ratio, and headed back up so as not to lose all elevation at once.

Nice view of Mt Ashland ski area

Brian ignores the trailwork warning sign and blazes ahead (HUGE thanks to all who maintain these trails!!)

Spotters contemplate pushing GP_pilot over for boasting about being the only one to clean it first time
Image

GP_pilot rips on the lower section
Image

406 got a pic of me on a drop in back to the creek & road where we were parked.
Image

Then it was off for a swim and the brewery. All in all, an awesome day of riding.

killer. honest question (for sean/evan), i've ridden both but curious what you like better: a typical ashland descent or a mill/remington descent? just judge trail itself, not any scenery. i like to see how others view different trails. thanks

Like noted earlier, 406 Evdog and I took the Ashland Mountain Adventures shuttle on Saturday. The peeps at the shop were chill and very helpful. Even hooking up Evan with some brake parts at no cost. Go see them for info or a ride to the top if you are in Ashland. Here's a shot of the trailer loaded up.

Awesome pics Deno, James, Sean! Always interesting to see what each person picks out for their shots.

I was having trouble with the dark conditions too. Not so bad here as at NUT, but it was still harder than socal. I finally had to pull out the instruction booklet for my camera for the first time ever on this trip!

They're all sweet trails but I liked the SuperD best. It flows really well, has nice berms, and fun perfect size yet rollable jumps. Very few ruts and just enough rock sections and log rides to keep things interesting. Lots of variation too from top to bottom, and I like the loamy/hardpack soil in Ashland better than the sand at Mill/Remington. I think the biggest thing is the design of the trail is better for accomodating/controlling speed. On Remington and the lower parts of Mill I found you could get going way too fast for the width and layout (ie tight switchbacks) of the trail and you were constantly on the brakes. On SuperD the terrain was more varied (rolling) and trail features seemed better able to contain or support your speed, so you could let go of the brakes and flow a lot more. You could ride the SuperD fast the first time on it, whereas on Remington and the bottom half of Mill you need to know the trail pretty well before you can really open up. The top of Mill on the other hand, is pure open throttle....but yeah I definitely liked the Super D course best...

One of our prime strategic vendors is in Yreka, just south of the border. I fly into Bend when I visit. Drive right past the turn off to Ashland. I may need to, ahem, extend, my stay next time I'm up there. Is there a shop that rents decent bikes?

Anyone try to pump their own gas yet?

I had the credit card in, gas cap off, and nozzle in hand before the attendant got to me. They're pretty quick on their feet though....

I pulled into a gas station and the kid told me I could pump my own diesel. I asked why the rule was in place. He said he's asked his bosses for 2 years and all he gets is "because it's state law". He went back to studying for class.
