I was able to sneak out on one morning of a five-day family vacation in Oregon. These are a few photographs I was able to take of Black Rock Mountain Bike Area in Falls City, Oregon, about 30 minutes west of Salem.

Image

The trails are hidden in these trees, about a 30-minute hike up a foresting fireroad.

Image

This little teaser was about 10 minutes up the road . . .

Image
. . . but the real goodness started at an area called "Basic Training."

Elevated skinnies, berms, boxes, drops, rollers -- you name it, they had it. These shots don't begin to do this practice area justice. And because I ran out of time and wanted to honor BRMBA's request that the trails be used only by bikes, I didn't hike any of the numerous trails out there.

^^^ That's a perfect description of quite a few people I saw up there, especially in the small towns, and it made the road sign leading into Black Rock all the more humorous. I stopped at a general store in Falls City to ask directions to the park and felt like I stepped onto the set of Deliverance. I may have been over-reacting a bit, but I carried my shank in the pocket of my hoodie as I hiked up the deserted logging fireroad by myself.

Here are some more pictures from various locations in Oregon:

Image

Crater Lake -- yes, the water really is that blue.

Image

Tubing the Deschutes in Bend.

Image

The Metolious River.

This shot, and the next two, were taken on the 4T (trail; tram; train; and trolley)
hike, which starts and ends at the Portland Zoo. The first shot is of Mt. St. Helens and was taken at Council Crest, the highest point in Portland. Mount Hood is visible from the same vantage point. From here you begin your descent on foot, to the second "T" -- the tram -- which takes you the rest of the way down to the city. The last shot in this group of three is evidence of how much of a bike-lovin' town Portland is.

No vacation is complete without a sample of the local craft beer scene. I should have gotten a picture of the bowls and bowls of wild blackberries we picked from our friends' yard -- they were the perfect complement to this tasty I.P.A.

Image

Upper North Falls at Silver Falls State Park, about 30 minutes east of Salem.

Image

Cape Meares National Wildlife Refuge on the Oregon coast.

Image

View of the Willamette River from Riverfront Park in Salem.

2,950 miles of driving in 8 days, and I still had a restful vacation -- there's something restorative about all that greenery and flowing water.

[edit: Sorry for all the blurry pics -- most of them looked a lot better on the camera's display screen.]

Great trip report but doesn't the lack of the bike just suck? I felt the same way when I was in Seattle.

It was a bit of a drag, but it was a family vacation and I was plenty busy (lots of hiking). We decided to spend an extra day in Salem and but for that I wouldn't have even been able to make it out to Black Rock.

I was thinking about the Salem area, but now that I've visited Bend I've added another place to the list.
