Hiking trail report….S40

Lots of flowers, bugs and WATER. It’s a good time for brushing and water feature work, but riding may be a while yet!

I got out there yesterday - around the lake, across CHER and around the Back 40 before heading home on the road below the school and up around the Dam.

Was super wet in some parts and totally dry and perfect on most of it.

It is amazing to see water literally coming out of the ground in some places and starting tiny creeks.

Some spots are downright dangerous to try and ride due to the mud and limited traction - I went pretty slow everywhere since I was not sure what conditions would be like. Bummer it is raining again today.

Did a quick out and back to the pad yesterday.

Dam Drain is still not working.

Muddy spots on the south side of the lake are still muddy but ridable except for one spot where the trail needs some major drainage work done where the skunk trail comes down off the volcano and meets up the main loop trail.

Got out today for the first time in a while.
The trails are rough, rutted and washboarded.
Super overgrown also. Damp in a few places,
not muddy.

Great to get back out.

Rode old school today.
Great to be out. Overgrown,
rutted, never a bad ride at Calavera.

It’s that plastic composite material, so should be fine, but until the mud film is washed off, it’s gonna be slippppery as duck sh*t every time it gets wet from fog or rain! It’s pretty darn slippery when wet even when it’s clean.

 Yeah, I actually asked the contractor if they would powerwash it when they were done, and he said the City would probably just sweep it with a broom.

Got out on Saturday Morning for a rare weekend morning ride for me. All was quiet, no Big trucks creating erosion problems. Just me and a few other responsible trail users recreating at one with Nature.

Down in the Back Forty I ran into a man named Ed as I was climbing up from the creek. He was riding a Dune Quarter Horse. I saw him right at a steep part and stopped. The guy was super cool and had excellent animal control and said he trains his Horse to be ready for Anything including Mountain Bikers.

This is the Third Equestrian I have encountered in Calavara and all 3 have been excellent horsemen with well trained and behaved animals. Gotta say that is a benefit to the area being more low key and not easy to access for Equestrians, only the good ones venture out there.

I was able to give the horse a gentle pet on the chin as he sniffed me and then we parted ways.

I saw him again near the end of my Downhill Run, just before I took a header near the creek.... Full video here:

^^^ I agree — my equestrian encounters at Calavera have all been good, with more experienced riders coming from Sunny Creek as you say, and probably because we both always yield the right of way, or offer to.
