How much money is being wasted to patrol unused land??? And what kind of vandalism could possibly be happening there? Maybe we should all quit participating in outdoor activities and become TV zombies instead.

marines probably figured out its a really fun section of trail to bomb around on with their quads so have to kick us out so they can have it to themselves lol

Has anyone ever seen marines in the twisty singletrack on the eastern side of the canyon? It's like 100 yd dash from the exit off the ridge trail into the ST there, there's no way a quad would fit in there once you are under cover lol

i've seen strava tracks of people just going down the other side of the ridge trail canyon right from the cardiac climb staging area, so I guess you can still get to santee unimpeded - but it adds a lot more climb than the straight shot up the canyon did

I think if we just stay on Stowe Trail, the Jarheads should just leave us alone. We can fight for Switchbacks or the ridge trails later.

I agree, but the problem is getting to people to do that.
And that's pretty much going to be the main objection that'll come back from them I'd guess.

Look at what just happened in Spring. They were just trying to keep people off the ridge lines. But people kept going up there (and even still keep going up there) so they took the first step in shutting down the bottom of Spring as well.

If people keep riding out there they will likely start picking people up and escorting them off the property, where they drop you may not be so easy to get back to where you started from. If that doesn't work they'll just take it up another step..

On the other hand, if people just stay out of there for while this will die down and things will get back to normal.

At least that's my take based on many, many years in the military. If you think they'll stop because they have better things for the Marines to do... keep thinking... they have a lot of people with time on their hands over there. Not only that but I would guess that anyone who can that watch on their duty day is begging for it.

previous command was pretty lenient, so i don't know if it's the new command, the stupid asshats who continued and still continue to ride on the ridges overlooking the live ammo firing ranges at the very top of spring/oak (you know who you are), the vandalism by hikers (noted on a previous thread), a purported lawsuit of someone who got injured, or likely a combination of all of the above.

although i think the military could and should have been more open in communicating the issues to, and integrating with, the public by clearly marking off dangerous 'in-use' areas, and collaborating with the city reps over the unused areas (such as the narrow trail corridor mentioned), people who ride the firing range ridge-line i think ultimately killed it for the rest of us by forcing their hand. cutting off the corridor, it may be reasoned, would reduce or eliminate riders on the live ammo ridge-lines. thus the rational to not only close the corridor, but also not relinquish it to the city so they can maintain control over this traffic.

from the people who know more about this i hope things can cool down, as per dwill, and that this will come to a better agreement, as per gardner. but for now, it seems it might be wise to limit riding to he southern area remote from the firing range sites and largely off military parcels.
