Does anyone have a pannier or trunk bag recommendation? I just put a rack on my cx bike and want something that is sturdy, can be easily removed and carried around, and relatively cheap ( < $40). It also needs to be large enough to commute with (clothes, towel, sandals, lunch, etc) and use for groceries. Thanks! |

i used to put a backpack or messenger bag in the fold-out basket of my town bike, and now i carry those bags in my xtracycle bags. i think some pannier manufacturers (arkel among others, but they are $) make panniers with stashable backpack straps, but i hear they sorta suck. i'm a fan of fold-out metal baskets. they are sorta noisy and ugly, but they hold a backpack or grocery bag easily. or you could do the same thing on the super cheap with a diy kitty litter bucket pannier

I got a trunk bag (by Delta...I have seen them at REI, also) off of Steep and Cheap for around $20. It's pretty functional, but only fits a lunch and a few papers + a lock. I also have a set of panniers that I got from Mountain Equipment Co-op (mec.ca) for around $90. They work well and fit anything I need to put in them, but are not waterproof. Ortleib (sp?) makes great panniers that'll last a lifetime but they're around $220 for a set. I bought a cheap aluminum rack from Velo Cult for around $20. All in all it is great to have the weight off of you and on your bike!

I got a Detours Toto bag a while back (here it is) and it's been great for commuting, and is perfect for detaching and being carried around. It's not huge, though - enough for a change of clothes, rain jacket, shoes, and miscellany, and that fills it. A more grocery oriented one I've been eyeing is the Toocan line. MSRP is pricey, but I've seen a couple on clearance at REI for ~$40. |
