i noticed i was dangerously low on wine today. i decided to hop on the xtracycle and take the scenic route to trader joe's:

first, i rode to my favorite east-west travel corridor in o-side, the san luis rey river path.
Image

there are some jumps next to it. i'm not one to leave the ground intentionally. maybe someone else can tell me if these are good for bikes? i see kids jumping them on bikes on occasion.

the san luis rey river, near i-5 and the pacific ocean

o-side beach, near the pier

buena vista lagoon from jefferson street, near hosp grove

i entered hosp grove park's trail network on jefferson street, on the west half of the park and noodled around a bit. it's a bit loose and dusty, with lots of eucalyptus leaves, so traction isn't too hot, but it's far from a technical trail. i think it's more of a nice place to go for a walk in cbad.

i cross monroe street, and noodle around the east half real quick...

2 cases of chuck + 12 cans of simpler times + some fixings for oatmeal + my scrawny self = clydesdale. sort of.

my favorite north-south corridor in o-side, rancho del oro

did you read this far? let me get on my treehugging commie soapbox a bit. if you believe in anthropomorphic climate change, then you probably know the time for action is now. actually we're probably fucked no matter what we do, but nevermind that. if you wait for the government to take the lead in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, you might be waiting a long time. drive less and use alternate transportation more. eat less meat (very food/fuel/water/transportation intensive to raise, big source of methane emissions). buy less shit (most of which is probably made in asia). blahblahblah... all this shit adds up. if most people could be aware of how they use energy and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, and take steps to reduce their ecological footprint, humans just might survive this latest great extinction. peace, love, and understanding, my brothers and sisters.

i suppose i should have bought san diegan wine or chilean wine, which generally has a much lower carbon footprint, but two buck chuck is the greatest winemaker ever. huzzah for charles shaw!

edit for 406: yeah simpler times is quite similar to american bmc piss, but i think it has a little something that resembles flavor. it might be a far cry from good beer that most of us enjoy, but i like it as a refreshing, flavorless cold beverage. on the otherhand, this stuff is canned in wisconsin, and shipping it here uses a fair bit of fuel and causes a fair bit of emissions. alrighty, i'll go fill my growler at oaw next time.

Nice post Alan. Now I know how to get 2 cases of vino up the trail. Stay on the soapbox because you're right.

mine is an xtracycle free radical (long bike conversion) that i found in some classified ads. you can convert most bikes with a free radical. i have the long travel kit (the vertical racks + bags) and wideloaders (the horizontal platforms on the bottom)

some bikes, like xtracycle's radish and surly's big dummy are built as long bikes.

xtracycle radish:

surly big dummy:

xtracycle says a free radical has a 200 lb load capacity. i don't plan on ever carrying this much stuff around, but it does give me the confidence to go to trader joe's and buy a couple cases of wine without knowing for sure if it will fit and or not. you can find images of people carrying ridiculous amounts of crap (probably greater than 200 lbs) if you do a bit of searching.

rode to ranch 99 in san diego yesterday. got 4 cases of shin ramyun and a 4lb jar of kimchi. it was a bit of a long and slow ride (75mi, 5hr), but i feel i can troubleshoot and dial in my bike while i do a bit of grocery shopping. anyone know how to fix a sliding seatpost?

ecological impact report: bicycling is one of the cleanest and most efficient forms of transportation ever, so not much impact here. shin ramyun is made in asia and presumably shipped and trucked in big containers for long distances, so it's pretty far from buying local produce. and it's loaded with palm oil, which is often produced in ecologically destructive and unsustainable way (indonesian rainforests clearcut and replaced by palm monoculture). so shin ramyun gets the big F ecologically, but it is damn good, and... well shit... if i knew how to make a good noodle soup and it was easy, i might not buy the stuff.

Just buy noodles and broth. Mix whatever meats and veggies you want. Egg Noodles are normally great.
