Post subject:  Lower Back Pain...WTF

So I rode last weekend and my ride was cut way too short by some super painfull back spasms. The pain is right above the waistline of my shorts and moves from the left to the right of my spine (it feels like it moves around day to day). I can run with very minimal pain, but I'm a bit worried about riding this weekend.

Anyone else had this issue (and this time it had nothing to do with a crash   )?

Thanks

I get lower back pain from riding when I'm not properly hydrated. It usually happens when the weather starts to warm up.

Maybe your stem is too short. Move your seat back and put on a longer stem and see if that helps.

Interesting you say that because, before the ride i did move my seat forward. i'll move it back and see. I,m using a 75mm stem right now also (been that way for a year with no issue though). anyone have a 90mm i could try or trade for?

Thanks all.

HH- I went out last nightand got a soap on a rope....just in case you're right

Train that core !! (Meaning : lower back , stomach muscles , sides.)

Drink alot of water like someone above here mentions , if you don't hydrate enough your intervertebral
"shrinks" and can cause pain in the lowerback.

But i hope for you it's just a positioning problem and goes away when everything is set up right again.

I think the seat is too far back....When in the correct position, a plumb line dropped from the bottom of your kneecap would lead to the ball of your foot (pedal in horizontal position). This means most riders will pedal with their shins angled just slightly forward.

I will second seat too far forward or stem to short. Since you just moved your seat forward I would say move it back. I did try a shorter stem earlier this year and had back problems. Went back to my old stem and it was all good.

So John, was it solved by the stem position, or was it something else? It is possible it is/was a back problem unrelated to riding that became obvious then. My back occasionally spasms from a herniated disc that can be triggered by something minor, but as long as it's not too bad, riding doesn't make it worse (thank god!). And I know I need to be doing those core exercises, or at least go back to yoga, to minimize it.
