Well, I was'nt going to post up here, but I seem to be developing a history of not recognizing when I have broken bones. Overly optimistic I guess. Saturday before last I crashed really hard at Alvin Meadows on some incredible sweeeet new singletrack. I was tired, late in the day, but having a great time, riding well (for me)...but failing to account for fatigue affecting reflexes and judgement. Missed a downhill turn, sailed off a boulder OTB, and slammed into the ground, just before sunset. Pretty painful hip & ribs. Had friends, lights, first aid drugs with me, so that was good. Grabbed a pine branch, tried to walk out in the dark for nearly an hour. After a while it was obvious that was a stupid plan. Had to be rescued for the first time in a lifetime of rock climbing, mountaineering, and mountain biking. Crashed at 4:30PM. Idyllwild fire rescue crew reached us about 6:30PM. Carried me out in a Stokes litter. Hard work for them -- I am really glad none of those guys got hurt. Reached Hemet ER about 9PM. Discharged about 2AM. Hip & pelvis x-rays did not show a fracture. I've been crutchin' around ever since. They suggested a follow up CT scan. Got that this morning. My doctor just called and said get the hell off that leg. I've got a "badly shattered" hip socket aka comminuted acetabular fracture. I'll be talking to the orthopedic surgeon very soon...

So this sucks, but on the other hand, it coulda been much worse, and the weather is beautiful today! I'm hoping by the summer I'll be ready to try my hand at some easy bikepacking. And that I'll have developed better judgement by then (but it can be hard to teach an old dog new tricks).

Meanwhile, in the spring, I might see you while I'm hobbling around Calavera.

Happy trails!

Glad they figured out what was wrong. Is it unusual for something like that to not show up on an x-ray? Hope the healing goes smoothly and that you're back outdoors doing what you love before too long.

Healing vibes. Hopefully sounds more serious than it is.

Thank you. I don't know if it's unusual, but the ER doc did recommend a follow-up CT, since it wouldn't support weight. He offered to do it right then, or said I could have my doctor follow up if it didn't improve. At 2AM on an ER Saturday night, I was way past ready to get out of there (I was really glad I hung onto my Camelbak with my own supply of water, food & drugs, cuz they pretty much ignored me while they dealt with the screamers).

Looking at my x-rays, the head of the femur ("ball") pretty much obscures a view of the acetabulum ("socket").The more typical injury is to break off the femur head, and the x-ray would've shown that. But a CT scan can "slice" behind to see the socket itself. Good thing.

Wow, Dan, that's quite a story. Sorry to hear the news, but maybe the ortho guy will be more encouraging. I've heard good things about some stuff called "Scotch"... oh, wait, that was from you! Heal quick, buddy!

jeez, that's some bad news dan. sorry man.

what's the time line? is it to the point of needing reconstructive surgery, or, hopefully, just some healing time?

get well!

My doctor thought surgery was a given. What type the ortho will decide...

anyway, welcome to the titanium club.
