Wasn't really sure which forum to put this in. Looks most at home in here. Here's what's going on:

I have Sixsixone Tiburon shoes from about 2001. Great shoe. Bulletproof. Lately I've been experiencing "Hot foot" (maybe)? Seems the pressure from the SPD pedals are creating a burning numbness pain in the ball of my feet, which in turn escalate to sharp pains causing me to stop riding. After a ride my feet then have swollen lumps for a few hours where the pressure points are. My insoles are original and I have a few different types of socks I wear, some help the condition mildly some make it worse. I also have a newer set of Adidas Minnret shoes I use with crank bros candies. These seem not to hurt as much but then again the candies have more platform than mech compared to the standard SPDs I use.

I'm not quite sure where to start with resolving this. Has anyone dealt with something like this before?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds something like plantar fasciitis, but not quite. That can be very painful. I think I would immediately get some much stiffer clipless shoes and maybe pedals with more support like Mallets. Don't ignore it and let it get worse. Maybe even run platforms for a while until your feet get better. Stretching your feet before riding might help.

You said pain at the ball, and this article says heel, but two people I know who had plantar fasciitis diagnosed didn't describe it at the heel.

Yep! What he said. Although, I'm not a podiatrist, I never played one on TV either.
I experience this when I'm on my feet for a long period of time, but never from cycling. I've tried arch supports in the past from the Good Feet Store. They work for a few months.
You might want to try a new pair of shoes. Your "street shoes" should be replaced every 6 months.

Have you considered aftermarket insoles, like the superfeet brand or maybe a custom orthotic?

Hahaha I hope its not Gout! That would suck. I am familiar with plantar fasciitis, but this definitely feels more like Metatarsalgia, or hot foot. I have to say when I switched to platforms temporarily it stopped. I'm also not discounting the fact that perhaps its related to me not riding as religiously as I used to. Kinda like how your butt gets sore first few times you're back in the saddle after a break? I think I will start with new insoles. I'll try and find some with metatarsal buttons. Apparently they help spread your bones out so you don't pinch nerves. Otherwise, does anyone make a Carbon soled MTB shoe? Figure that would be stiffest, but suck to HAB in. Thanks for the help guys! Keep ya posted.

Or maybe a carbon shoe would be worse:
http://recoverydoctor.blogspot.com/2009/06/cycling-and-hot-foot-or-metatarsalgia.html
...a quick search turns up lots of discussion on other health & fitness, bike, & triathlon forums.
If switching to platforms worked before, that seems an obvious change to make. Good luck.

i second dan's suggestions.

the spd my be concentrating too much force at that single point. platforms could distribute that force around better, and you're more able to move your foot around more than with spd. i remember getting that as well with spd pedals, but not to that extreme. also had it with some running shoes that didn't fit well.

sounds like you're pounding the uphills too. that's never a good thing.

Thanks again guys. Something else I discovered is that my cleats screws are protruding past the rigid sole of the shoe, leaving at least small bumps in the in sole. Not good I would assume. Guessing that coupled with worn out insoles could be the issue. The plastic sole structure feels just as rigid as it did new. Since new insoles and short screws may be cheaper than a set of Mallets I decided to start there. I picked up a pair of Speshy BG footbeds (blue, mid arch) after they put me on this arch-o-meter squishy thingy. They feel strange but I'll report back when I get a decent ride through them.

And yes, I do sprint up hills at times, but alot of riders do, don't they? Without foot pain?

i do the fat man's hike-a-bike

no foot pain since

edit- yeah, with those screws compounding the other issues...... hope you've fixed the problem. the bone in that area may still be sensitive for awhile.

Huh? Sadly, that never even crosses my mind, much less actually occurs.

Nothing bragging, just that most people who've ridden with me can attest I usually have more leg than lung, so I ride accordingly! Other side of the coin is how do you avoid mashing when riding SS?

The BG ortho footbeds, 1.5mm Varus shims, shorter cleat screws and pushing the cleats all the way back seemed to help a lot! I don't think the screw length was a factor as I couldn't really feel them but you never know. I changed too much at once for pinpointing the issue. Will take some getting used to but the hot foot just about gone. This may be common knowledge as well but eggbeaters seem better left used with super stiffy soled shoes! Thanks again everyone for the advice.
