Finally a ride worth posting. After two prior years of cancellation due to Covid, the Archipelago Ride was revived and revitalized.

Prior to this, my longest ride in two years was less than 25 miles, so I was approaching this one with some trepidation and concern. Frankly, I was not especially looking forward to it. Turned out, all I needed was a check up from the neck up to get rid of that stinkin thinkin.

The Type 2 fun I expected morphed into Type 1 fun along the way. I was a little surprised how much I enjoyed the heck out of this ride. I suppose it helps knowing "you're in it together" with all the other sadomasochists, coupled with a challenge.

Other than the wet drizzly 'riding in a cloud' conditions for the 2nd half of the ride, the weather was very cooperative and cool. No worries about dehydration. Never even went through a full water bottle between aid stations. Although by the end, on those final climbs, I began to wonder if a couple of Midol pills would also work for leg cramps. (According to the Interweb, it might. Also helps with hangovers apparently).

I was greeted at the finish by RedHotSloth who was awesome enough to pack a flask of Tullamore Dew :bang: , as he was waiting on DirtyBoo and Don to cross the line (can't remember your username since you never post Don!).

I cannot believe it, but I'm signing up again for 2023.

How much of the first half of the ride is open all the time for riding? I'd be interested to learn how LaCosta connects to Lake Hodges via elfin.

Here's a shared link on Ride with GPS to a map of the first two sections of the Arch ride, including La Costa, Copper Canyon, San Elijo, Questhaven rode to Escondido Creek, Elfin, Hodges, and San Dieguito River Park (plus a way back if you want it to be a loop):

It used to go all dirt from La Costa to Elfin with some special right-of-way permission, but that trail just east of Copper Canyon was closed, last year I think it was, and the 2022 Arch route looks like it went out onto paved road to connect them. The Elfin to Hodges connector is open to bikes, but has nothing to recommend it except that it IS a dirt connector. Fairly straight and pretty damn steep, so best (and faaast) going downhill from Elfin to Hodges.
