Since trails are basically closed, I am looking at getting a new bike for the wife as an early b-day present. She's been riding her 160/150mm fulls suss through the streets and it's just a bit overkill. This bike will be used primarily on the roads, but needs a smidge of capability to handle patches of dirt. There are a couple of considerations: * Prefer a complete build * No drop bars - flat only * full-Rigid * Geared - Prefer single ring up front * Prefer lower stand-over * Lighter weight is also preferred * New or used OK, especially if something used has been built with better stuff. * extra points for 'cool' factor and am slightly biased against the big brands, but that's my issue, not hers. And big brands may have better deals, so definitely will be considered. * Sales / Good Deals a big plus Here's one possible example of what I have in mind, but stand-over may still be a bit much (and price is on the high side). http://www.bikehabitat.com/product/all-city-super-professional-apex-1-bike-372703-1.htm This also looks interesting: https://surlybikes.com/bikes/ogre Throw me some bones! |

I like that SPOT but am not sold on belt drive and internally geared hub. A little more than I want to spend too. She's leaning on the Surly Ogre for the time being. |

Surly Big Dummy? She can carry all the food and beer. Farmers market and brewery runs, romantic picnics on the trail or at the beach. Assuming this isolation eventually ends. By then her quads might be bigger than yours. |

lol! I think I see what you did there. I can stick with the Ogre and get her a Bill or Ted trailer to tow around when required. For example, I could use cases of wine and beer right now. Get to work woman! (I hope she doesn't read this). |

Story got longer than it should have. Tried. Failed. Trying again. Was original going to go Surly, but a Kona Sutra was suggested, with a swap to flat bar (lever brakes), single ring, 1x11. Looked pretty good. Delivery never happened though. Filed claim with my credit card company last Tuesday, and am moving on to something else. Soon... |

Yay! Pulled the trigger on Sunday. Had decided on the bike that seemed like the best fit for her, and tried to buy local - went to SD Sunday to a shop that sells the brand. They were retarded and had no clue how to size it, or even any real knowledge about the bike. Lame. Got home and google-fu'ed the shit out of the internet. Found a shop in LA that seemed to know the brand well (with references to other sites I'd been peeping), and have their shit together. So I gave them a call. First class! They were on point (http://www.goldensaddlecyclery.com). Got things ironed out easily by Sunday evening. Made the trip up there today (one of the very few things to be thankful for during Covid-19: light freeway traffic made for easy 80+mph the whole way there and back). Got home, slapped some pedals on 'er (the bike, not the wife), and went for a spin. Dang! What a difference on the roads. She was way faster! I had to pedal more than I'm used to on my klunk to stay on pace. And what the heck; I decided to get some extra bling for my klunker as long as we were there. Got so engrossed that I forgot to snap a pic. So I'll do that soon for the "big reveal". |
